So I'm looking to upgrade my hard gun case for travel. Most of the quality cases I found, the the pelican series, require the foam be cut in the outline of the gun being carried. This obviously makes the case a one gun case. I am looking to get more versatility out the case. Any suggestions?
Thanks

You can buy more foam and cut it to different configurations. Just make sure it is the higher density foam. But a cut out is the safest way to transport. Although I had a case with just loose foam run over by a forklift and miraculously the guns were ok. I had added extra high density ensolite foam.
South African Airlines bought me a much better case as it was the only thing close we could find in Windhoek. It is so heavy duty it put me over the weight limit by some 30 lbs. The new case has cutouts.

Americase makes an excellent, high quality case. Cutouts not necessary.

Buy extra foam sheets at the fabric store, cut them to whatever gun you want to take. Store the extras....

I have been real happy with the Negrini cases as they are very lightweight, tough and I can slip them inside a wheeled duffle so they are not obviously a gun case. I am packing now for an Arizona unit 10 elk hunt and will further pad each compartment with either socks, shirts or poly underwear.

I have one that holds three guns, its some where around 9" x 12" X 50 or so inches long, the guns fit in vertically just like how you would hold them while shooting. Its heavy enough that I put rollers on one end and a handle on the other to drag it through air ports, the great thing is its heavy enough they can't throw it like they so love to do with those light cases. I take two rifles and then pack the spare slot with fishing gear, spotting scopes and any other breakables I might be taking along.

If Pelican is the brand that suits your fancy, look for a version with the "pick 'n' pluck" foam.
As for the Boyt mentioned, you'd be hard pressed to convince me it's not a re-branded Pelican.
Lastly, ICC and Kalispel make a h*ll of a case - aluminum. The now discontinued Cablea's branded aluminum cases were ICC or Kalispel, and have served me well.
I never thought I'd grow up to be a grumpy old man, but I did, and I'm killin' it.

Thanks for all the replies.
Wi, the phrase 'pick 'n' pluck' was new to me and it took a while for me to figure out what that meant.

I have 2 of the pelican cases, the type the military uses.
The foam in it was cut to fit a M4 and other goodies. I just for a sheet from the Gibsons in Weatherford,it was the eggcrate type and it worked like a charm. I take out the bolts before i put them in and have not cut the foam. They are snug in there and do not move around, even when riding in the bed of the truck.
To add i carry 2 Mauser 98s in it and have no problem fitting them in ,even with a 50mm scope on one of them.

Well must the original foam that comes in the pelican cases be replaced with egg shell foam or be cut out in order for the case to close? In other words, can the pelican foam be used without cutting the outline of the gun?
Thanks

Like Phil (458Win) I prefer take-down cases for traveling, finding them a lot handier, and just about any long gun can be dissassembled enough to fit. Taking the stocks off bolt-actions off bolt-action rifles, as an example, works fine.
The one I've been using for more than a dozen years now, after wearing out a lightweight aluminum case, is a Browning Bruiser. I don't know how many firearms it's carried, but its accomodated everything from side-by-side-shotguns to Ruger No. 1's and various bolt-actions.

I have a Pelican case and have never cut the foam. It works just fine. I have had 2 rifles in it or 2 shot guns in it and traveled on the airlines at least 6-8 times with no issues. It's just a little hard to close.

I have one of these Boyt H48 cases. I haven't traveled by air with it but it's a good rugged case at a reasonable price. I got mine at Gander Mountain for $100. They're on sale now for that price. http://www.gandermountain.com/modpe...arbine-Hard-Case&i=617469&r=view
