Well i went and bought a ruger M77 Mark II all-weather 25/06 and topped it with a mueller 4-16x50 illuminated mildot scope. Now I just need to kill me some coyotes!

The .25-06 works real well on coyotes if you choose the right bullet. If you want to save the fur, use bullets that are designed for deer size game and you will do fine. The Sierra 100 grain "Gameking" is a good one if you like boatail bullets, and their 100 grain "pro-hunter" is another good choice if you like flat base bullets. Stay away from varmint bullets with the .25-06 if you don't want football sized exit wounds.

I think I'd shy away from the 100gr bullet's in it. I used some on some porqupines years age,,,FUBAR!!!! Actually I wouldn't shoot my 25-06 at anything I'd want to keep the hide from. That said, I've shot a couple coyote's with the 117gr bullet, broadside thru the chest.
Damage wasn't bad,,,,,,,,,,depending on who's determining the word damage,,you or the coyote!

I'll second the comment about varmint bullets. I don't save fur, and shoot the 75 VMax out of my .25-308. A high center hit will sometimes drop each end of a coyote in separate directions!

Guys, I have been whacking coyotes with .25-06 and .257 Ackley for many years, and I know what I am talking about. Just shoot one with an 85 grain nosler ballistic tip if you don't believe me. The 85 grain ballistic tip is a "varmint" bullet which will kill coyotes very dead, but the exit hole with a broadside hit is gonna blow a mighty big hole upon exit. Use the bullets I recommend and you will usually get an exit but it will usually be one that you can live with.

Regarding the 85 gr. NBT......devastating is the word. I thought 75 gr. V-max's were bad but the 85 NBT is even more so. Shot a crow with one and I couldn't believe that heavy of bullet spread bits over a 10 foot circle. It was beautiful. I believe the 25 06 is the line where you can't kill them any deader(grin)

Coyotes may not be the only thing that responds to a call. If we are calling in mountain lion areas we will use larger calibers in the event that a lion responds, ala 243Win, 257 Roberts, etc. Now, in 46 years of varmint calling, I have only had three lion approach (three rugs now on the wall) a stand, but, over the years when walking back to truck I have seen lion tracks over our footprints numerous times. Two callers in the Morenci, AZ area needed eight shots from a 223 to kill a responding lion; they now carry a big bore handgun and/or larger rifle caliber.

For a 300 rum I would give a try to a 200 TSX and keep away from big bones. It may well work quite well.

Early season, Oct thru Dec. lots of pups come in so quick & close a blow gun would damn near work. Later in the season, older smarter dogs, the 25/06 will smak-em waaay out there. .300 ultra......load up some 100 grain varmint bullets, may not be fur friendly, but would be fun to watch.
If you're gonna grille it, you gotta kill it!

Rackmastr, On field mice and such, the hammer would likely not be needed but the original question was in regard to coyotes I believe.
