but I brought home a 1957 Marlin 336 RC straight stock (Texan) in .35 Remington today. I was up at the North Florida Arms Dealers show in Jacksonville, helping my Brother in Law with his table. The guy across the aisle had the Marlin. Its a gun I have wanted for some time, the price was right, and its in my gun safe now. I have cleaned it, and mounted an old el Passo Weaver V4.5 20mm scope. Monday I will pick up a set of dies, some Speer 180 FP bullets, and some 4895 powder. Durn deer better watch out now.

Cool, it's always fun when you stumble across something that's been on your "list" for awhile.....My trouble is, the list just keeps growing!
Enjoy your new rifle.......

Hey Mannlicher,
Just before I was released from active duty, I bought a Marlin 336 in 35 Remington from the Camp Pendleton Base PX up at mainside. Mine had the pistol grip. I easily put a Lyman 66 on it and had a blank put in the rear sight dovetail. Just following Jack O'Connor's suggestions.
I didn't handload back in those days and tended to use the Remington 200 gr Corelokt. In quick shots it moved like an extention of my arms and that big old bead was always right there.
The quickest I think I have ever seen a deer drop is when I swung it on a fast moving Mule Deer at maybe 60 yards. I don't even remember aiming.
I still have the rifle, and have been lately wondering how fast I might get Speer's 220 gr moving from this strong little action?
Enjoy your new rifle; I have mine for over forty five years now!

If you want to see it perform on really big game, stuff some 220 gr Speers ahead of some 3031 and go hunting!

What's not to like about an old Marlin Lever in 35? I've got a couple of them. I like the slender forend. and It's tough to beat the 200 grain coreloct. You shoot at a deer and I guaranteeeee it'll be a dead deer.

Find a woman made in 1957 and tell her she's not sexy. Sounds like a good find to me!

Hey Mannlicher,
Thanks for great photos; but I have got to agree with SuperCub - it would look more natural with a good receiver sight. Also, I am wondering, isn't that comb too low for a good check-weld with the scope way up there? It was not set up for a scope, particulary not one of this size.
Regardless of this slight difference of perspective, I would sure like to hear how it does with those 180 gr Speers, or whatever.

frankly, at past 60, my eyes really need the scope. Note that the Kassnar 4X is mounted in low rings, so it is just about right when I throw up the rifle. I am fairly certain that I am going to replace the scope though. I can't decide between two old timers, one a Denver Redfield 5 Star 20mm 1 X 4 variable, the other an ElPaso Weaver V4.5, another 20mm tube. I have always felt the straight tube looked better on a lever gun.

Hey Mannlicher,
Say no more. I am well past 60 and certainly understand what you are saying.
However, I have found that looking through the rear peep hole does indeed sharpen up that front sight and the territory beyond it. I believe that this optical occurence is called "the pinhole effect."
Have you ever tried this with your old eyes? Works with mine.

exmarinejensen, I do have a Lyman receiver mounted on my 1954 Marlin 30-30 IMP. You are right, it sure is better than a buckhorn sight. Still, the scope gives me the ability to 'see' into heavy cover, and I have reached the point that I just won't hunt without one.
