Looking for a hunting scope w/illuminated reticle. Must work at all power settings and the reticle must not be too large when illuminated. Suggestions? powdr

I've never been a fan of those because I always felt they were too bright on the lowest settings. But two scopes have changed my mind on this: the Conquest DL 3-12x50 and the Leupold VX-R firedot duplex.

While the glass is better in the new Zeiss, the Leupy isn't far behind -- and the improved "L" duplex reticle is better for hunting, in my opinion, than the Zeiss 60.

Nightforce 2.5-10x42 with IHR reticle. Multiple brightness settings, red or green, only the center plex of the reticle illuminates so it doesn't wash out your target.

the best on the market in my opinion IR is the Zeiss in Victory HT, not seen the DL but I bet its similar. I have the NF as well, the IR is good the Zeiss is better, let's not discuss holding zero here...

A 3-9x40 Firedot Duplex went for $375 here a few days ago... It's really a well done reticle.

I have the VX6 1-6 with the plex, and the firedot 4. Both would suit your needs, but they are 1100 bucks new. They are pretty amazing as far as image quality, field of view, and eyebox. Weight is around 15 ounces, so that is pretty light for a 30mm tube. I think they are a big step up from the VX3 line.

I have never seen an illuminated reticle that would give me an extra 5 minutes of shooting ability.

Huntz is correct. What it does is make aiming in poor light much easier, especially on a darker target like a hog.I have no use for reticles that fully illuminate. They hamper my vision. But the small dots utilized by such scopes as the Conquest DL or the VX-R work wonderfully, especially considering how dimly they can be adjusted.

I tried out a VXR 3-9x40 this year. It helped me find the reticle much easier but I'm not sure it extended my hunt very much. I wish it had turn-knob instead of push button controls. I can say that for the price I'd rather have it and not need it then miss out on a shot that may have been possible. It replaced a VX3 and my eyes can't tell much difference. It stayed on the lowest setting which was about perfect.

I hunt at night with a VX-R on my AR. Seems to work well for me. I would be an optics snob if I could afford it, but my scopes all seem to land somewhere around the VX3's. To me, the VX-R seems every bit as good as the vx3's I own.
