Wondering if any one is shooting an SMLE/Enfield in 45-70 that was a conversion by Gibbs rifles. If there are any tell me what you think of it and how does it function etc. Thanks for your time. Cheers NC

Though I do not have a Gibbs conversion, I knew a fellow that did shoot one and he was pleased with it. There was also an article a few years back about how to extend the chamber to accept .45-90 ammo with no other changes to the rifle. With some Google time, you could no doubt find the article and other material on the Gibbs .45-70. Good luck.

crsholton Thank you Sir. I also believe there were some conversions using the 43 Mauser as a basis for a bolt gun for the 45-70. Cheers NC

A buddy of mine made one of the slickest .45/70 bolt guns ever. Used a Siamese Mauser with AAA Fancy wood. Shot like a dream.

one of the worst "the one I should have bought" is a Gibb's 45-70 for 180 dollars. I didn't have it and couldn't get it and have regretted it always.

Deerstalk If I came across one for $180.00 I would have my wallet out so fast I might break my hand or arm. I wonder if there are any laying around these days. Cheers NC

For similar performance and if you can't find a Gibbs or Siamese, the 450 Marlin can used in a conventional SA, just needs a magnum bolt face.

Yep, if it's a short-mag, typically just screwing in a barrel does the conversion. Some mag-tweaking may need to be done.

It would probably need some minor work.
I built a .404J on a .300 RUM donor. Some work had to be done to tweak the bolt face, but that wouldn't need to be done here.
The feeding ramp had to be slightly widened for the fatter bullet to feed slick and a 450 conversion may need similar treatment.
It would be pretty close to the short .458 WM, which had gotten some good reviews.

A few years ago I had a P14 Enfield action barreled up in 450 Marlin. It makes a fine 45 caliber rifle.
