can one of you folks who have this stock measure the width of the stock at the tip of the fore end? I'm wondering how it compares to the compact (I'll be using a fwt contour)
thanks

I measured just before it starts to round off. 1.260"

1.265" before it begins to bevel into the tip itself, at the fat part of the stock on the sides. 1.1" at the flat part, where the barrel channel is. If my terms are too technical, I'll try to break them down better....(grin) I have one for a Howa Youth. And by "Youth" I don't mean small deer, but it certainly appears so... And one on a Ruger 77 Hawkeye in .308. I find the design not only functional but very aesthetic.

Thanks Pat, so that seems really close to the compact. Are you happy with the stock design? Assuming you have a 1" pad could you also check the total length of the stock?

32" OAL 1" pad 13-1/2 LOP. I prefer the sako hunter with the drop comb and palm swell but that design can only handle a #4 douglas contour. The classic can handle a #5 which is what I went with on my .375 ruger.

thanks IMO, I think you'll be happier with the compact if a FWT barrel is in the plans. The forend is only slightly more narrow, but it's about an inch shorter which looks and feels right with the smaller barrel. Classic on top, Compact below. I kept the Compact and sold the Classic. It's not a FWT barrel but it does only measure .560 at the muzzle.

TC1, I think you're exactly right. I looked at my compacts last night and took the tape to them. It's been a couple years since I ordered one and now looking at Rick's online list for winchesters I don't see it, does it go by another name than ""edge compact"?
Thanks for the input guys!

They have a new one out this year. It's called a Sako Compact. It doesn't have "edge" fill though, just smaller and more compact. If I remember correctly It's only about 2oz lighter than than the Classic. It does away with the cheek piece and has a slightly thinner/shorter forearm.
It's new this year. You might need to call McMillan to order it or have Rick add it to the list.

TC, My plan is for edge fill. So if I want the compact is that now called" winchester hunter's edge"?

I'm not sure, I've always steered clear of the "edge" fill option. A call to McMillan should clear that up.

Of the Sako Hunter, Classic and the Compact, I like shooting the Hunter the most.
If it's a featherweight and you're deciding between a Compact or a Classic I would go Compact.

Randy, Winchester Hunters edge is another way of saying Winchester Compact with Edge technology.
The Hunters Edge is marketed by McMillan as their ultralight stock, only available in Edge(graphite) technology.
The Winchester Compact is offered in fiberglass construction with all the fill options, and also Edge technology.
A person could order a Winchester Hunters Edge or a Winchester Compact with Edge technology and the result would be the exact same stock.

Dayton, I do believe you've pegged it, I went ahead and ordered the "hunter's edge" as I think it's the best fit for a fwt .270.
Thanks!

McM really confused things when they introduced the "Winchester Hunter". The "Winchester Hunter" = "Sako Hunter". The "Winchester Compact with edge tech" = "Hunters edge" "Winchester Hunter" with edge technologyWin 70 in "Hunters edge" which some refer to as Compact with edge technology

I figured you'd notice it. When I took the picture, the "aviator" thing was going strong, but I never posted the picture. It's good to see that you've kept your strong values.
