The principal of my grade school terrified me as a kid he wasn't mean but he didn't tolerate bull $hit at all. When I got to the 7th grade he ended up being my home room teacher and geography teacher. It was there that I discovered what a awesome teacher and person he was. He was a true sportsman and outdoorsman who was fare in his ways and had a true love for his students.
I could play him like a drum, when it got about 3/4 of the way through class I could bring up the subject of fishing and class would be over, he took it hook line and sinker. Or did he? He was a teacher that we would listen to because he would listen to us and we learned more because of it.
One day he come in after we had talked about crappie fishing on Douglas lake with a scoal can and said here Seal I brought you something. He pitched it to me and I opened it, it was full of panfish grubs and lead head jigs. Years later I would bump into him at the trap club from time to time and he always remembered me and we would shoot the breeze. Today I was on the water till 1:45 giving myself enuff time to go to his funeral. On the way to the funeral I realized I had picked up a habit that I had never paid attention to. When I fish, especially for panfish I carry a dip can with grubs and jig heads or tied hair jigs in my pocket. As I drove there I still had a can with tied bass jigs in my left pocket. A habit that I have had for 30 years. I don't remember a damn thing about geography but I remember the kindness and the commitment of a great teacher and a even greater man.
Goodbye Mr. David Bennett you will be missed thanks for the grubs.

Great tribute, Troy. I didn't know the man, but your story has blurred my keyboard.
May he rest in peace. We can only hope to have the kind of positive effect on young people that this man obviously had on you, and probably others.

Yep, a world full of David Bennetts would be a good place to live. Thanks for your kind works Sam, birds of a feather brotber, birds of a feather. Mr. Bennett was little of a curmudgeon too, not unlike us. Lol. I find that most curmudgeons are pussy cats but like Bennett don't tolerate bull $hit very well, also not unlike most of us fire types.
