629 S&W PC V-Comp 5" 44 magnum. It's a tack driving hand cannon. Errr, maybe railroad spike driving... Sans muzzle brake

I've carried it bear and deer huntin in PA. I don't really back pack unless it's part of some other activity. I've yet to perfect the holster situation. I don't mean to imply that it requires a backpack for transport. Lol.

That's a very nice revolver.

Thanks, I wanted one back when they were offered in the late 90's, but could never afford one at that time in my life, then last year I stumbled on a brand new unfired one. I jumped on it.

I've toted all of these at one time or another backpacking. Depends on where I'm going, weight considerations, threat level...

Oh, and this guy's got a coupe miles on him... Heavier but short barrel and Simply Rugged make for a decent rig.

I have a 329. It is a good gun. But in wolf country a strong argument can be made for an auto. Wolves run in packs, and are phenomenally fast.
Trying to just get a single hit on one when it is doing 30+ MPH over uneven terrain would be challenging at best, and it would be extremely easy to burn through 6 rounds in a hard recoiling gun like the 329. Don't get me wrong, I like the 329, but I have no illusions as to it's "shootability", as compared to a compact semi auto.
Plus there is the reload factor. A sub 2 second reload is no challenge with a G30S, and I can then have 17 rounds of 230 grain JHP on tap with a G21 magazine and a + 4 base plate, as my spare mag.
Where I hunt we have wolves, lions and bears. The G30S makes a lot of sense, when you have a pack frame on, or a sled full of quartered up meat. I came to this (almost) same conclusion a few years ago, but settled on the G21 instead. When weighing all of the possible threats a guy could run into while enjoying the outdoors, bears are a relatively small slice of the pie chart. The G21 is utterly reliable, shootable, holds over twice the ammo of a revolver, reloads quickly, and is about as rugged and ignore-proof as a handgun can get. Mine carries either 230 Gold Dot or 225 TC hardcast. Coincidentally the same gun works perfectly when returning to civilization, although I find myself gravitating to a G19 about half the time.

Good to know the USFA's are better than Colt's.
I did not know that. I will keep my eye out now.

I've been carrying a G20 everywhere I'm allowed for 24 years. I don't know how I missed it, but I MUST have a Glock 40. IMHO, no truly portable handgun carries as much Kinetic Energy in one full mag as the Glock 20...with the original Norma load - 200 grain semi-wad cutter at 1200 fps.
I HAVE to get a Glock 40 now. I've only been waiting since 1991.

Holy crap, this thread got resurrected after 6 years?
Yes, I still use the G29, and yes, I still think it's the best sidearm for the lower 48. Matter of fact, it recently got even better with the introduction of the Underwood 140 grain Xtreme Penetrator load.
I have lots of pistols, including lots of wheel guns, but I never think twice about grabbing the G29. I wear that thing on my hip all the time, drag it through rain, mud, snow, dirt, sticks and whatever else, and I know that it will work when I need it to. I love that little thing.

Here's a vid of the 10mm Glock 40 shooting the xtreme penetrator through bullet proof glass. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WDvzul3rvTk"but it just zips right through without doing any damage" you say. Wrong. Wound channels are actually very close to what you'd see with a good hollow point. MAC tested some of the 9mm variety through barriers and compared them to gold dots and HSTs recently. There are several vids on youtube testing these things lately. They're the real deal. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0piGeTVMZWs

Ive have done a fair bit of backpacking and canoeing/portaging, and can tell you there is a big difference in what I will carry for those activities verses taking a walk to deer blind or going for a day hike. Model 29 yes, yes. I call mine the magnificant bastard. Had a few 10s over the years. All good but, the glock finish, cap, and shootablily get the nod. Don't get a newer Delta unless you check the case support first, mine (and many others) would bulge cases with everything but powder puff loads. I like the fact that you can have 14-15 rounds in a 20 or 29 in one mag with gun. No speed strips, loaders or lose rounds rolling around. Also if you fish with waders, ever pull you gun out of your chest holster at the top of your waders to find it covered in presperation or get your gun dunked. Rain, a dunk in the canoe, a dunk in the river, blood, your glock will laugh it off. Not so with your S&W revolvers, ruger black hawks, etc. great guns, big power, had a few, won't go back.
Like other said before, the scandium and titanium revolvers are great to carry (had a 41 taurus) but boy are they a bitch to shoot with real mag loads, much practice needed, but the titanium won't rust, not sure on scandium. Taurus went back to factory twice before I fixed it my self.
Other 10s : s&W, dan wess, witness, rIarmory, are good but heavier than the glocks.
Glock 29, or 20, or 21 with super are awsome for backpack or paddle/hike.

All this 10mm talk has me wanting one real bad. I have a taurus titanium 41 mag I'm going to get rid of and replace it with a G20 or G29. Every aspect about them suits me better than the Taurus.

Recebtly switched my carry gun to the glock gen 4 mod 20. Added night sights and a pyramid trigger system. Was always a 1911 fan, but in 10mm never got the level of reliability I require. Never was a glock fan, but after it being my duty weapon for 10yrs did get a grudging respect for it. Used to carry a 1911 45acp and when brown bear was the peceived likely threat switched to my bear gun. But I've had to shoot a brown bear in back yard and could have done same a couple more times, decided I wanted 1 gun for concealed carry. Now carry the mod 20, 135 underwoods at 1600fps and extra mag of buffalo bore 200 hardcasts at 1220fps in case of bear encounter. Have roughly 500rds thru it and not 1 stoppage. Have been charged twice by brown bears, like the accurate firepower the mod 20 provides.

I am betting those would do pretty darn well against a large predator. I am more of a .45 guy, but I still have my 10mm and .40 short and weak conversion barrels for my G21. The conversion barrels make the large frame Glock a pretty practical sidearm choice. I know RJM ended up with one of the new long slide 10mms, and has done more than a little shooting with it, so maybe he could give an opinion on best ammo choice for a 10mm.

Mackay,
The 10mm barrels are just a drop in for the G21? OEM barrel or aftermarket?
