I have a Remington Ti in .270.
I'm wanting to create a very lightweight custom rifle from it...
I'm leaning toward re-barreling in .280.
I need a gunsmith to do the work, true the action, square the boltface, lap the lugs, chamber the barrel, bed the rifle, etc...
Will probably go in a McMillan Edge or something else very lightweight...
Who are some good reputable and fair gunsmiths??
Any recommendations on barrels??
This will be my first custom project that I have started on my own...
Thanks...

I would suggest selling the Ti .270 and buying a Pierce titanium action which could be had for less than what the .270 will bring. Then proceed with your build, no action truing necessary. As far as barrels, there are several good ones. Hard to go wrong with Brux, Broughton, Lilja, Hart to name a few. Several good smiths that frequent the fire, I'm sure others will chime in.

The Ti may not need truing. They were made for Remington by a 3rd party and are generally straight & true. Would be worth confirming before you spend the money to "fix" what isn't broken.
If it does need truing, Greg Tannel is hard to beat.

Thanks... Isn't a 700 Ti a very light rifle already? Make sure the gunsmith you choose is experienced with machining titanium alloy. It doesn't cut like common 4140 or 416 steel. That said, are you dead set on blueprinting? The Ti actions had a rep of being pretty square and true IIRC.

I had Bob Green install a #2 taper hart on mine with no truing and it is a solid .5 moa gun when I do my part and probably better in a more capable shooters hands....

If the .270 barrel is not shot to pieces, and is accurate, I'd bed it in a McMillan classic edge or MR edge, and go forth and fill an ark. I don't think the McMillan edge will shave very much weight off the B&C Ti stock anyway.

How does the rifle shoot now? What are your goals with the build?
I have a Ti that was built into a .280 similar to what you describe. I like it a lot, but at the end of the day my setup plows the same field as your current rifle.

Greg Tannel, but the wait is about a year.

I'm building mine on a Pierce LA with the Ti recoil lug also. Mark Brown of Brown Precision built a custom Kevlar stock for it, Jewell trigger and a #2 Shilen. It is in 280AI. It is about ready to be sent out to Oerlikon Balzars for their PVD WCC coating.

That's going to be a really cool rifle. Looking forward to a report when it is complete.

Thanks... Color me envious. There is a lot of overlap between the .270 and .280, until you twist the barrel about 1:9 and use high BC bullets. Then the .270, along with a lot of calibers, can't hang. If I had your rifle I'd be doing a .280. And I'd choose a good local gunsmith and take the barrel he recommended.

I deer hunted this year with the same rifle you have now, and can't see tearing apart an original Ti to go from 270 to 280, but to each his own. Mine shoots plenty well the way it is, and I kind of like the stock ergonomics. The only thing I'd change about the rifle would be making it a BDL, I hate blind mags.

Dont overlook the Wildcat composite stocks. At around 17.5 Oz unpainted they are at a different level of lightwieght compared to the McMillan.
The only downside is the do need some light finishing and some paint.
I got my Model 7 260rem down to 4lb 13oz unscoped, something thats only possible with a wildcat stock.

Couple of things...a Brown Precision "poundr" Kevlar stock will get the job done at one joy-filled pound. Also, you are looking for uber-light, don't consider brux in Stainless. They have adopted Krieger's policy and will not manufacture a number one barrel in SS.
I'd take that Ti factory barreled action (if it is a proven shooter) and pop it into a poundr. You'll be in the four pound (and change) range. and you are likely many hundreds of dollars ahead.
I'm putting together a LH SS lightweight 700 in .280 right now. With the High Tech stock it should come in right at 5lbs 5ounces naked.
Oh...and don't forget the Cervellati recoil pad for that super light build...

Redneck (Lee C.) built a 280 AI around my Ti action and it is a tack driver. He used a Pacnor Mt. Rifle contour barrel, dropped it in an Edge Mt. Rifle stock, and added a Timney trigger. Very pleased.

What are we talking? 2-3 ounces? Cervallati micro cell pad is 1.9 ounces for the 15mm...
