The hunters of the past were different also. Take my father in law. One rifle, one type of ammo, stubborn, persistent, resourceful, tough. etc etc.....That is not to belittle today's hunters, but our dad's were some tough ole geezers.

I can relate to Aggiedog. My father in law bought a then new 721 30/06 when he came home from the service. $90 with a box of ammo from the local hardware store I believe. He used that one rifle nearly exclusively for close to 60 years.
"One rifle, one type of ammo, stubborn, persistent, resourceful, tough. etc etc...."
Exactly. If I could be half the man and hunter he was in his prime, I'd be happy.

Do the 721/22 series have the same barrel contour as the 700, or is it lighter?
What's the diameter at the muzzle?

The latter guns produced after the barrel boss was discontinued use the same contour as the 700 standard calibers as far as I can tell. The early guns had a donut sight boss like a pre64 M70 on them and were longer.

The .257 was chambered in the 722.
In fact the 722 established the standard length for "short actions" with magazines a little over 2.8 inches long. Most other manufacturers eventually followed their lead.

Thanks. I would guess that the 244 was in the short action also?

Does anyone know of a supplier for 721 30-06 extractors? I've kept my eye out for the past couple years with no luck. I know they are hard to come by. Any leads would be much appreciated.

Thanks. I would guess that the 244 was in the short action also? 721 (LA) offered in 264 Mag, 270, 280, 30-06, and 300 H&H 722 (SA) offered in 222, 222 Mag, 243, 244, 257, 300 Sav, and 308 725 (LA) offered in 270, 280, 30-06, 375 H&H, and 458 725 (SA) offered in 222, 243, and 244 I've seen a lot of these rifles over the years, but don't ever recall seeing a 721 in 264 Mag or 280 or a 725 in 375 H&H or 458.

I have my dad's that he bought in about '52 when I was 4. Years ago he redid the stock and Dad wasn't a perfectionist. It's not pretty. It had one of the infamous triggers that was known to fire when the safety was released. I took it to a gunsmith for repaid but haven't used it much since. The safety is too loose and will jiggle to fire when carried for a while. I don't trust it.

Pappy, Had a 725 come thru the shop about 2 years ago. It was in decent shape. Just had no interest in it. Like I needed yet another 30/06! I can't recall ever seeing one in the flesh, but do remember the ads. The only Remmy CF I've ever owned was a 600 in .308. After that I developed a taste for M70s, Mausers and Sakos and never went back. I do sneak a peek at 30Ss once in a while and keep hoping to see one of the rare 720s. I only have one '06, (unless you count my .308), but this one's gonna stick, I think. Not much need for that much horsepower around here, but I see a lot of them wrapped up in really nice rifles, so I can never say "no more" for certain. Lately I've been thinking that I need to experience a 1903 Springfield of some sort, but don't know which one yet.
What fresh Hell is this?

I let my 721 .30-06 get away but I don't feel bad as it wasn't a shooter. I freefloated it but that didn't change things. Id like to get another in .270.

Many years ago when I became affluent enough to own a second deer rifle I bought a used M-722 in 257 Robts. I still have it, now on its second barrel. I won't sell it before JB sells his Grandmother's rifle.
The cream of the crop, for me, is the M-725. I got mine in 244 Rem (slow twist 1:12) years ago in a San Francisco Bay Area gunshop. The gun was practically un-fired with just a few closet dings in the stock. A scope had never been installed. It was on consignment from some one who had inherited it. The price had been dropped very low because nobody would buy it because they couldn't get factory ammo in 244 Rem.
None of those city slickers knew what a 244 Rem was. They were glad I bought it to clear the spot on their rack.
Due to the slow twist it puts factory ammo and all other 100 gr bullets into two-inch groups, but it is freaky accurate with light bullets. 65 gr NBTs shoot consistent five-shot groups into 1/2", which is as good as I can shoot a sporter. I put a Leupold 3-9 compact on it. I like the Enfield safety, too.

nifty - two - fifty, that would be another fun one to have. The 244 Rem... One of my friends in Kansas has slayed a boatload of coyotes, etc with a 6mm Rem.

Here's my 721. Came from my dad needing a new stock so I put it in a 700 take off. One day it will be bored out to either 338-06 or 35 Whelen, gone back and forth for years and still can't decide completely. Only thing for sure about it is it will not be going anywhere.
