<br>WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) - A jury ordered a gun distributor Thursday to pay $1.2 million to the widow of a teacher gunned down by a 13-year-old student in a landmark case targeting inexpensive handguns.

<br>The jury, however, pinned most of the fault for the 2000 slaying of Barry Grunow on the gun's owner and school officials.

<br>Widow Pam Grunow sued distributor Valor Corp., claiming the small, cheap pistol of the kind used by the student killer often fall into the hands of juveniles and criminals. It was the first case to address both the absence of a gun lock and the flaws associated with a cheap, easily concealable weapon.

<br>But the jury said 45 percent of the fault for Grunow's death lies with the school board for allowing Nathaniel Brazill (news - web sites) onto campus that day and 50 percent with the family friend who kept the gun unlocked in a dresser drawer, where Brazill found it.

<br>Brazill was sentenced to 28 years behind bars for killing his teacher with the .25-caliber Raven handgun.
<br>

<br>Valor Corp., with 14,000 licensed firearms dealers nationwide, argued that the gun did what it was designed to do and it wasn't at fault.

I read it in today's paper... Both sides are appealing. It was a six-women jury. They must have all been blond!!! PorkyPooh

Not only blond, BUT, this was a Florida jury. They probably voted on the verdict with a butterfly ballot!

I have since read the plaintive's lawyers are going for the whole 25 million from Valor. Ain't gonna happen. Valor will undoubtedly appeal the 1.25 mil. I'd guess they will settle out of court for a substantially lesser sum just to be done with it.

<br>How come those two white kids that beat their dad to death with a bat ended up with 7 & 8 years respectively (they will be out at 18, and no doubt an asset to society) while the Valor black kid (same age) got 28 years for shooting his teacher. Of course, in the bat case, the judge arbitrarily threw out the jury's guilty verdict, and mandated his own sentence. Didn't know they could do that, but I suppose Miss Piggy O'Donnel still has pull in some liberal circles. If I was the black kid's lawyer, I'd sure try to use this discrepancy - personally, I think the white kids should get more time, and their pedophilic "friend" should be taken out and shot. Slowly.
