I finally managed to catch up to one of the elk in 936 on Thursday morn. I was able to spot a small herd slowly feeding and making their way towards cover and noticed there was three bulls with them. I quickly did a 180 and used the low ground to get ahead of where I figured they were heading. When I got to what I figured was a decent spot, two of the bulls were already passed but I couldn't see the third. After a few moments I could see a back and the tips of his antlers slowly coming over a small rise and after a few more steps he was feeding right in front of me at 280 yards according to the range finder. He never knew what hit him and was down within 20 yards. One thing that is different about this fella is that his one antler seems to grow right out of the middle of his forehead. Oh well, it won't hurt the taste and should make for an interesting European Mount.

Cool rack! One of his grandparents was probably a unicorn.

Which cartridge? There seems to be a fair amount of meat loss...

Congrat's on your elk and thanks for the story.
I have a 1 X 5 just like that on my wall. Shot him in a 3pt. or better area. Thought I had a unicorn spotted as well the first time I saw him. Then he turned and I could see the bizarre rack. The "spike" antler on mine is about an inch high directly over his right eye. The left side 5pt. is quite large and beamy, in fact, the biggest diameter beamed elk I've ever shot.
But ya know...you can harvest typical racked elk anyday of the week. Of the racks I've kept that adorn my walls, ole' "Oddball", so engraved in his mounting hardware, gets the most attention by those visiting. I also remember his last fall day better than most all of the other's.
Enjoy your "Oddball".

I shot a 5x5 with a busted skull like that once about 7-8 years ago. Elk have got to tougher than iron to survive stuff like that.
If you're gonna grille it, you gotta kill it!

That is a cool looking bull.
I read an article once that said it takes so much force to bust up an elks rack, that often times they get concussions and may die from the collision. Usually when I see antlers like yours, I would think it indicates a broken skull plate at some time, sees like the same would apply.

I think you have the right idea with that European mount. I'd like to see that.
