I've ordered a Ruger American SS LH 7MM-08 Compact (The Davidson's model w/ 18" barrel). The idea is that it will be lighter and handier than what I'm currently packing for Elk. In 4+ decades of Elk hunting, I've killed quite a few (and shot at more) but only one @ very long range.
The scope will be about 2X7 (no larger than a 34/35 MM objective, or heavier than 11/12 ounces). I'm looking @ scopes in the range of the Redfield Revolution and the Leupold V1. Something around $200, but I'll spend more if doing so makes sense. Is there a particular scope that you would steer me toward? The duplex/type reticle is fine.
I know you have experience with the 7MM-08. I have none. I'm thinking of the 140 grain Accu-Bond if it will group. I've shot Partitions since John Nosler turned them out by hand and always had good luck with them. The Accu-Bond just looks more streamlined and performance sounds similiar to the Partition. Any other bullets or loads that you would recommend for my stubby barrel? I did read your Guns article about IMR4350 and Big Game powders working well in longer barrels.
If commenting on particular brands is a problem, I surely understand, Any help is appreciated.

Hi Larry,
Either of the scopes you mention will work fine for your purposes on a 7mm-08—as will a 140 AccuBond in an 18” barrel with Big Game or H4350. I use H4350 rather than IMR4350, because the “short cut” kernels fit better in the 7-08, especially would under an Accubond, while is longer than some other 139-140 grain 7mm spitzers.

To bad you have such strict limitations on scope specs as I would put the Bushnell Elite 3-9 with the Firefly reticle. It can be had on several ebay sites for $250 ish, has a great reticle for low light, 3.5 inches of ER and weighs roughly 13-14 ounces. They have a fantastic reputation for durability and tracking and the optics are better than Leupold's VX2 series (noticeably).

What about eye relief???I have two of the 3X9 4200s and had to mount them on light kickers because of crappy eye relief.Other wise a very good scope.
Its all right to be white!! Stupidity left unattended will run rampant Don't argue with stupid people, They will drag you down to their level and then win by experience

On a 7-08 he won't have any issues (or shouldn't) with ER. I just bought a new 4200 3-9x40 and it defiantly has more ER than Bushnell suggests. It's at least 3.5". I had a 2.5-10 Elite 4200 mounted on my 300 WM till I upgraded to a Leica ER 2.5-10x42.

Gotta love a scope that defiantly does something it's not supposed to. Is it the Rebel model?
