I'd put Auburn and LSU 8 and 9 or 9 and 8. West Virginia 10. Arky is due for a whippin' in 2 weeks and that'll move 'em up another notch.

I didn't understand a word you said, but whatever it was I'm right there with you.

All us dumb-azzes should learn that Ark hasn't even come close to playing anyone as good as USC either. Arkansas played way above their potential in the loss to USC. Ark wins more than 5 games and all their fans actually think they should be ranked with the big boys. That my friend takes real intelligence to understand. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" />

isaac;

12 team conferences; each with 2 six-team divisions.

Right now, there are, what 11 conferences, with 4 Independents, making a total of 119 Div. 1-A schools.

That's either got to go up one team and down one conference, to 120 teams in 10 12-team conferences, or down 3 conferences and 23 teams to 8 12-team conferences.

I think up one team is the most likely, and that'd work just fine.

The ACC, SEC, Big 12, MAC, and C-USA have 12-each, they are set.

Put Notre Dame where they belong in the Big 11, making 12.

Put Temple back in the Big East, along with Army and Navy, and one more team, Probably Middle Tennessee State. That puts 12 there.

Put Hawaii and San Jose State in the Pac-10; giving them 12 teams.

Put Nevada, Idaho, and Boise State in the MWC/WAC, giving them 12.

Put La.Tech, Fresno State, Utah State, and New Mexico State in the Sun Belt. Have them pick up one new team from D-1AA (San Diego?). That should be 12 all around.

Each team limited to 10 regular season games; 5 divisional, 3 conference non-divisional, 2 non-conference.

12 team playoff, minimum.

Each conference champ (10 twelve-team conferences), plus 2 at large bids.

Top 4 teams get byes in week one; Teams 5 and 6 play teams 9 and 10, teams 7 and 8 play the at large bids. That'd leave 8 teams after one weekend, 4 after the second, 2 after the third, and then a title game in week 4.

Maximum number of additional games past a 10 game season for the two title contenders is 4, and that's if they aren't in the top 4 going into the playoffs.

Most teams are playing 12 regular season games plus a bowl now. That only adds one game to their schedule.

How's that for a set-up?

Can the teams be compelled to join another conference by the NCAA or is it a voluntary call only? Also, what or who would determine the at large bids?

If they/conference wants a shot at the title, I have a feeling the NCAA can "make them an offer they can't refuse".

Use the polls for the at large bids, or a selection committee like for the basketball tourney.

In your scenerio, how do you determine con. champs? Purely by record? Only problem is that you'll have teams that won't play each other during the season. What if you have 2 undefeted teams in the con?

Should add that while that scenerio looks great on paper, I don't think theres a chance in hell the college game undergoes that drastic a change anytime soon. I think the most likely change would be to add an extra BCS game. Match up 1 vs 4, and 2 vs 3 and have the winners play in a National Title game. This would have eliminated the controversey in '03 and '04 seasons. Not saying its the best solution, just the most likely. Would also love to see them get rid of preaseason polls. No polls at all until after week 4.

Conference champs get determined via the conference championship game.

I forgot that one. Add one more game to the scenario.

Oh, and best case would be a 16 team playoff, no bye week for the top 4, just get it on and get it done.

Agreed that I don't think there's a chance in hell of that happening.

My stab at how the ranking will come out, BCS wise:

1: OSU
2: UofM
3: Florida
4: USC
5: Arkansas
6: Notre Dame
7: LSU
8: Rutgers
9: WVU
10: Texas
11: Auburn
12: Oklahoma
13: Wisconsin
14: Boise State
15: Wake Forest

Now, my take on how the rankings SHOULD come out:

1: OSU
2: Michigan
3: Rutgers
4: Boise State
5: Arkansas
6: Notre Dame
7: USC
8: WVU
9: Wake Forest
10: LSU
11: Wisconsin
12: Texas
13: Auburn
14: Oklahoma
15: Georgia Tech

Why?

No loss teams out front, strongest to weakest. Then one-loss teams, then two loss, etc.

Hey, win out, and you're #1. Lose one, and get behind those that haven't

Saying that this team or that team would crush another without seeing it on the field doesn't work.

Texas SHOULD have crushed K-State. Louisville SHOULD have beat Rutgers. Cal SHOULD have beaten Arizona.

But, they didn't.

Prove it on the field first, then prove it with talk. Those with one loss should not be ranked ahead of those with no losses, regardless of what conference, schedule, whatever.

Give the kids a chance to play, and prove themselves.

Hey, look at the NFL: Chicago SHOULD have rolled last weekend... but ended up with a loss. Does that dash their playoff hopes? No, but another couple of "shouldas" will.

Why should this system be any different?

----------------

Getting hosed by the refs at Oregon is really killing OU in the polls. Everyone knows they did not lose that game, but the two loss record is killing them both in the polls and in the BCS standings. Such is life.

You don't know squat about Arkansas. Darren Mcfadden barely played the USC game because he had nearly self-amputated his toe three weeks before. The QB who started for Arkansas that game does not even play QB anymore. He is a 6th string wide receiver. It was the first game with a new offensive coordinator. And....Arkansas turned the ball over 5 times directly leading to 31 USC points. Felix Jones had 3 fumbles in that game. Since then, he has fumbled once. The USC game was a convergence of many bad things for Arkansas. They are definitely not the same team now.

Joe, no question the Pigs are red hot now. That game with LSU ought to be one of the best of the year.

Coss,

Its a matter of agendas as to where you should be ranked based on past games vs current games. Auburn beat WSU by 26, but USC was fighting them off in a last minutes drive to win. USC lost to an, at the time, unranked Beavers team. Would Ark beat USC today? Who knows, butwould they lose as badly? I don't think so! Would LSU beat AU by 30 today? Likely! But they didn't when the time came. Same with Florida. What will Cal and ND do with USC? Yet to be determined. The polls, flawed as they are, are as much about when you lose as they are about who you lose to. There is no rhyme or reason, under the current system, that it should matter when you lose, but only who you lose to and how you lose to them. However it does matter. Loser early and you're ok, lose late and it doesn't matter to whom or by how much...unless (insert the many variables here that have nothing to do with how good a football team you currently are!) Who is crying about Detroit getting robbed of a WS Championship? Nobody...they had a chance on the field and blew it...in the face of overwhelming odds in their favor by the numbers. We all know the Super Bowl doesn't always pit the best 2 in the NFL against each other...yet nobody debates the SB champs! The only debate as to championships in any major sport that lingers post season is the NCAA Football Div 1 Champs!

K-State messes with Texas
How do teams make up the lost revenue from bowl games - it's as much about the money as bragging rights.

THE championship game is Saturday in Columbus, BCS aside.

Fish--You might be right--sadly.

Sean--We didn't do too bad in our stabs at it. Wisconsin threw us a bit , but the rest ain't too far off.

I'm not sure why some of you guys get all worked up over the weekly BCS rankings instead of just waiting for the teams to finish their respective schedules. The rankings were different last week than they are today and they will undoubtedly be different again next week.

THE championship game will be played this coming weekend. Where other teams end up on the list after that is less important and will always be subject to conjecture. How can anyone make a case that whichever team that plays the winner of the Michigan v. Ohio State Penitentiary game is playing for the national championship UNLESS that team happens to win that game? That's almost like saying that every team that faced OSU during the regular season was playing for the National Championship; it discredits the record and accomplishments of other teams over the course of the entire season.

Some of you have said that your favorite team's loss or two early in the season is less important because the team suffered from injuries of key players, didn't have their program together, or whatever. As I understand the rankings, they determine who is the best team throughout the season so far, including the early games in the schedule, not just the best team this particular week. The whole process doesn't currently provide a clear cut and unanimous list of the 10 best teams, but a playoff system wouldn't determine the best team over a season, just the winner of a couple of match-ups at the end of the regular season. As I think .280 said, the winner of the recent World Series wasn't the best team in baseball, they were the better of the two teams that played that week.

If the NCAA football championship was distilled into the equivalent of the World Series or the Super Bowl, we wouldn't have the opportunity to complain about how our favorite team was screwed in the polls. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

Just as an aside, I'm curious about the 1/3 computer ranking that BCS uses to determine the weekly rankings. This week, the computer picks Michigan over OSU for the top spot. Does anyone know what criteria is used by the computer? Does the computer pick have any kind of track record, good or bad?
