As I recall the engraved "Shah of Iran" Model 99 was illustrated on the inside cover of the 1948, 49, 50, 51, 52, 53 and 1954 catalogs. The gun as ordered by President Roosevelt to be given as a gift, was a target single barrel shotgun, fully engraved. How this got applied to a Model 99 is lost to history. Anyway, something happened to change FDR's mind in giving the Shah a gift and it was returned to Savage Arms and was never presented to the Shah. The gun was engraved by W.H. Gough who was the company's engraver for the A.H. Fox shotgun line. The "Shah" rifle remains in the United States in the care of a private family. JTC As usual, John. Right you are. Here is the 1948 catalog. And here is the rifle and text.

Thanks for posting the rest of the story. I didn't know that it was not presented.
Anyone know the serial or caliber? 1948 would be a 5xx,xxx Chicopee rifle but since it appears to be a TD the serial might be earlier.

Rick,The gun is a take down built for Shaipur Mohammad Reza Pahlavi in office from 1941 thru 1979 F.D.R. was in office from 1932 thru his death in mid 1945 I believe the gun was built on a 1930's frame so you have a 4 year time line!

Sorry to drag this out but it has been rather busy around here and just as I start reading this thread someone always needs me to do something...not that I mind. Someone please clarify... are we talking about one rifle or two? I'm good with the RFD rifle. Is there a later one, also?
