Quote
The record Powerball jackpot just got bigger, climbing to $800 million as sales soared in the days leading up to the drawing.

Gary Grief, executive director of the Texas Lottery, says officials with the Multi-State Lottery Association on Friday raised the estimated jackpot for Saturday night's drawing from $700 million because of strong sales.

Grief says Powerball sales on Thursday were double the previous record for that day and that it's possible the estimated jackpot could rise again before the drawing.

A winner would have the option of being paid $800 million through annual payments over 29 years or opting for $496 million in cash.

$496M in cash would result in about $300M free and clear after taxes, depending upon which state the winning ticket(s) happened to be in.

Just in case folks are curious...

Actually it's a 1 in 292.2 million chance.

I just bought a ticket 15 minutes ago. Can't win if you don't play. grin

I've never bought a ticket. Guess that's why I am still here! grin

Fox reported your chances for winning are better by purchasing in PA and letting the machine pick the numbers.

I haven't bought 10 tickets in my life, but I might spend $20, too!

I read somewhere that you stand a better chance of them accidentally sending you the money, than actually winning the lottery... so, I wouldn't buy a ticket and that increased my chances of winning. confused

She bought a hunna dollahs worth.

There is the old truism that the lottery is a tax on people who are bad at math.

The rate of return is fairly spectacular, however.

Kinda funny that many people won't play at a much lower dollar amount when the odds of winning are better but they play when the amount gets way up there and the odds of winning are worse.

I could find worse ways to pi$$ away $20. The ROI is pretty good.
