Can anyone recommend someone to rough out a stock for a Mauser, preferably near the west coast? I have wood.

Thanks.

Richards microfit:
I've used one of their pieces, and put about 40 hrs into final fit and finish. Few would have the patience for such, but it's an "Oh Wow" unit when it comes out of the case.

If one secures a drop in unit without having sent in the metal, then too much material has been removed.

About an 85% complete would be more satisfactory for me to start with. Still one needs some planes, rasps, chisels, gouges, crossing files, and chain saw file, inletting black and brush, and wood working or other padded vice to do good work.

Then sand paper, sanding blocks, and patience if one wants a deep multicoat finish. A great snowed in winter endeavor.

My only experience with CRACK was back when it's founder Michael Kokolus was still alive. He produced a great 1903 milspec stock for me. I'm not familiar with the Marysville outfit though b they are only about 40-miles north of me. I first thought they were a restart of Great America Gunstocks who were located across the river in Yuba City. There is a gunstock outfit up in Idaho who I understand bought out Great Americans business after they had a bad fire a few years back. I can't think of the Idaho company's name at the moment but I will look it up.

PS - the Idaho outfit is called Walnut Grove Gunstocks.

Thanks for the advice; I live in Sacatomatoes, which is less than a 2 hr drive from Marysville so I'll go by and look at their patterns and otherwise bother them. I'm 75 and have been making stocks since I was a teen, some from scratch, but don't mind paying to have the early work done if I like their pattern. The only one I've screwed up was in the early stages(what's wrong with a chainsaw?).

Thanks again.

I do duplication. Do you have a pattern? If not what shape did you have in mind?

If you call Denver close to the West coast.

Just my 2 cents.

Holy crap, how does a smart phone turn CRS into CRACK!!! Sometimes I think I could throw this phone down the garbage disposal.

I'm in Sacramento too. Marysville is less than an hour away. Have you looked at Boyds? There styles are a little on the humdrum side but I think their stocks fit up without a ton of fuss and, in my experience, they stand by their products.

Ramrod- I'm leaving in the morning for a sailboat race in AZ and when I return I'll check out the Marysville group because they're so close. If that doesn't work I'll get back to you. I'll want a classic style stock, and either with or w/o a cheekpiece is OK. If you don't have a pattern I could send a stock I made from scratch about 40 years ago to use, but it's on a Rem 700 and that probably wouldn't work out too well. I do have another on a Mauser but it's not quite as good a job.

Ramrod- I just saw a photo of your 25-06 Mauser stock on AR- beautiful, and perfect for what I have in mind, assuming you have a pattern for it. I'll check out the Marysville outfit first, then get back to you if needed.

I second these guys. Worth your time to drive up. I had them use my wood for two Mauser 98s in modern classic style. Nice tolerances and layout use of the grain. Two matched stocks out of an extra large rough blank. Fair price and I bought another out of their case while there. No such thing as drop in Mausers.
