Davidson's recently had Ruger make some Americans in Compact, Stainless Steel and Left Hand. They weigh 6 pounds and are just over 36" long with an 18" barrel.

I got one in 7MM-08 before Christmas but it's been too miserable outside to shoot it. Finally, we had a nice and quiet (no wind) day yesterday with a high of 27 degrees.

I shot 20 rounds, mostly getting it on paper and breaking in the barrel. I did fire three 3 shot groups after fouling the barrel before each group. I found that a clean barrel caused the first shot to go approx. 1" high. The barrel cleans up easily and quickly.

Using H4350 @ 100 yards,

140 grain flatbase Sierras (with a less-than-max load) went into just over 1 inch.

140 grain flatbase Sierras (max load) went into exactly 1 inch.

120 grain Ballistic Tips (close to max load) went into .377"

All the loads went to the same POI -- or very close.

Also, noted: for a 6 pound rifle it didn't recoil badly. I COULD tell the difference betweed 140 and 120 grain bullets, though. The trigger came @ 3 pounds with only the tiniest amount of creep -- I'd never notice it in the field. It does, however, have a loooong take-up with no resistance before it trips. Something I'll need to get used to.

This rifle appeals to me, being so light and handy. It's a joy to tote around. I'll have a shorter 2x7 scope on it for hunting.

I'll eventually work up a load for 140 grain Nosler AccuBonds for my Elk hunting. I didn't drag my Chrony thru the snow but I'll chrony loads when it gets warmer. Hoping for 2800 fps with the AccuBond.

Yep, that's the same on I have in .243 lefty. I also have the full length version in 7mm-08 ready to shoot, but snow and 30 mph winds don't make a pleasant range day.

I put a full length stock on mine (from Ruger parts department), just because the LOP was very short for me. I do like the short barrel.

On my two I did the 5 minute Ruger American trigger job as shown online in several places. That trigger will easily go down to 2 pounds if you want it to.

I bought the 22" LH SS RAR in 7-08 have 8# of RS BG first load went into .54" 3 shot shot 4 more different loads all 140 gr. worst was 1.84". Sold my blue RAR LH 7-08 to buy the SS it was very accurate. The RAR is difficult to shoot well off the bench. IMHO

When I bought mine it was $55 shipped. I heard they are currently about $70, but have not called to verify. They won't give you any info or even put an order in without a gun serial number. I often think I probably shouldn't have sold the original stock, but I can always pick up another one if needed. Would be a good gun for youngsters to grow in to.

UPDATE:

I got the Chrony out yesterday and got some velocities.

140 grain Sierra w/max load of H4350 = 2760 fps
120 grain Bal Tip w/max load of H4350 = 2850 fps
Hornady 139 grain WhiteTail Factory = 2670 fps

I'm still shooting the Sierras into almost exactly 1" - 3 shots
The Bal Tips easily go into 1/2" -- 3 shots
The factory Hornadys went 5 shots into about 3/4"

I'm well pleased with the rifle.
Still getting used to the trigger's loooog take-up.
Nosler has NO 140 grain Accu-Bond in stock yet
. Thought I'd buy some 140 grain Bal Tips for practice; which have the same BC.

I'm always looking for tips on powder and bullets for this --- new to me --- caliber.

Wish Ruger would do SS Compacts with threaded barrels. Be all I'd really need for TN Hunting.
