They should all have a serial number.....are you saying it has been removed somehow?

No it hasn't been removed. This has been discussed on here before. If I remember correctly some theories were that maybe some employees built their own gun at home.

Any inspection stamps on it at all? An SP stamp on the barrel? Anything on the front of the receiver under the forearm, or underneath the buttplate/buttstock?

No it hasn't been removed. This has been discussed on here before. If I remember correctly some theories were that maybe some employees built their own gun at home. Sounds like an inside job to me.

Firearms with defaced serial numbers have been illegal since the 1934 NFA I think.

Okay guys here is what I found. It does have an SP on the barrel. No numbers in the forearm. The stock and the buttplate both have 388 on them. Other than that there are no markings at all.

388 could be a valid assembly code, I guess. Though I don't remember seeing any 50's rifles without at least one letter in it (but I haven't looked at ALL that many). The SP would indicate the barrel was tested on a rifle, wouldn't it? At least I presume the "Savage Proof" stamp came after the test fire?
