Howdy:

Anyone use the Hornady .375H&H 250gr GMX factory ammo in their .375H&H? What sort of results did you get accuracy and terminal performance-wise? FTR, I expect to use this only in North America.

Got the chance this year to take after critters with the CZ550 AmSaf in .375 H&H my wife bought me a few years back. I pretty much fell in love with it, as it fits me just about perfectly, shoots Remington factory 270gr SP into one ragged hole at 100 yards, and subjective recoil is less than even my Rem700 in .30-06. It handles and holds/points really nice for me, too. Oh, and the bbl length and/or cartridge pressure doesn't leave my ears ringing after a shot the way my wife's .243Win does if shot without earpro during a hunt.

I'll eventually handload for it, but I also like to have factory ammo options ready to go. The aforementioned Remington 270SP load is good up close at sub-200 yards, but the Hornady 250gr GMX looks like I might be able to stretch to nearly 300 yards without having to hold over.

Thanks for any tips.

No reason not to. I have a load worked up in my Winchester using the 250 Sierra. It's got about the same trajectory as a 180gr. .30-06. The GMX should easily handle anything in the continental U.S.

That will increase the utility of your 375....you can use the 250gr load on hunts where you might have used a 338. I used to hunt Bear in BC with a 375 using 235gr loads.

I used the 250 GMX's (blems) this past July and Sept culling PG in Namibia. Didn't use the H&H but a Ruger 375 loaded to about 2650fls. Took a total of 26 head split between gemsbok and red hartebeest from 75 to a little over 200 yards. Most shots were broadside "vital triangle" shots and a few head shots. All broadside or quartering to/away were complete pass through. Only one bullet recovered from a head shot that angled directly through the gemsbok forehead and lodged several vertebrae down the spine. Bullet was pretty much just a glob of copper.

Could have pushed them faster but that velocity was the "sweet spot" for that rifle and was very close to MOA. Not bad for factory seconds. Previously used 270gr TSX's at similar velocity but the 250's gave a bit better trajectory

Past 100yds meat damage from broadside hits was there but acceptable/minimal. Inside 100 we tried for head shots as broadside hits caused a lot more bloodshot meat.

Indeed. 250gr at those velocities ought to do the trick and any big game here in North America.

Biebs:
To increase the utility of my .375H&H is the intention, sure enough. The factory Rem 270grSP has been perfectly satisfactory on hogs at less than 100 yards, but the round nose profile implies and ballistics tables show that after 200 yards, it quickly drops (or at least more than the .30-06 & 6.5x55 I am used to). I'd like to have minimal hold-over at 300 yards, which is about the farthest I would trust my skills on big game, given a good shooting position/support.

M3taco:
Sounds like you have a sweet load developed for your .375Ruger. And that the bullet is effective and can be hand-loaded to shoot well.I need to try the factory load and also get some components.

Thanks to you all.

I've used the 250gr TTSX in my 375 Ruger for a "North American" load. Worked great on my last two moose. I had some great results with the 250gr GMX on latest .375 bullet test. Might have to try them out next season.

Has anybody taken a whitetail with a slower 300 grain solid? I ask because it seems that it wouldn't sponge up much meat and there's no question that it would kill instantly.
