Is anybody aware of a program that allows an ordinary person to buy gasoline at current price, in a futures contract or loaded onto a debit card denominated in gallons(as opposed to dollars)?

You can always open a commodities margin account with a broker.

Seems there was a thread on something like this a few days ago.

I'm just thinking I want a debit card that I load up with 1000 gallons at today's price...wondering if such a thing exists.

You could also look at exchange traded funds (SPDRs). That would be less a direct commodity investment and more of an oil industry investment though.

You could just buy a couple of older 500 gallon fuel tanks and put them in your yard. They are cheap around here. $200 would get you two of them if you look around. Put them on stands and you'll have your gas right at home for bulk price. Might be a problem if you live in the city.

Once gasoline futures contract equals 42,000 gallons of gasoline. Click Here You'll need to put up 20% of the current value of the contract to buy one. With the near term contract at $1.02, you're looking at over $8000 plus commission and margin interest fees to buy in. Of course you'll also have to be able to take delivery of 42,000 gallons of gasoline if you don't sell your contract before the expiration date. The two 500 gallon tanks is the way to go IMHO.

I wouldn't buy. I don't think we've seen bottom yet.
I don't think anyone would want to fool with an individual, but some cities and counties contract with gas suppliers (distributors or stations) at fixed prices. You'd have to negotiate the price, term, and quantity.

It's not how low the bottom is, it's about WHEN the bottom is. Why buy now if the price is going to stay low for five more years?
Given the duration of historical swings, we've got several more years of low, low prices. Then there will be another boom into the stratosphere, and then the sky will be falling again.

Technically that's not a "futures" contract but a forward purchase. And if you were to sell it at some point in the future you would have to report it as a derivative sale. But it sure doesn't seem like a good idea at present with prices declining.

There used to be about 10 years ago. On a web page I would "buy" a set number of gallons at a price I offered up and a local gas station would accept. Only lasted a little while before it went out of business. I wonder if those that prepaid for a lot of gas ever got it all?
