I've been using the 50gr "Varmint Nightmare" or whatever Midsouth calls them; the V-Max is certainly a sleeker bullet but I buy these soft points from Midsouth in bulk whenever they have a sale, and they shoot really well in my rifles. I'm still curious who makes them though.

Benchmark works well for me with the 50 gr. bullets. CFE 223 with the 55's.

I've switched to 60gr V Max's in all my ar's.
I hate loading 223, so awhile back, I bought a can of 400 rounds of HPR 60gr V Max reman. They shot great in my 1:9, 1:8, and 1:7 twists.
I bought 2 more cans from Sportsmans Warehouse.

OK, thanks. May I ask how you know? (I'm not disagreeing, just looking for confirmation.)

I know Nosler makes the Midway "Dogtown" bullets (saw them being packaged while on a tour of Nosler) but the Midsouth bullets look a bit different, so I assumed a different manufacturer.

I am shoving them in a case full of Benchmark, Ackley in one, standard in another.

Are you talking seating depth wise? Just curious. Thanks.

After many years and countless critters shot with the 50 gr NBT, I have switched to the 55 NBT just because. But after trying pretty near all of them from light to heavy, they all tend to work when you put them in the right spot.

I'm still a fan of TAC but use Lever and a few other powders too.

I use 50 Vmax with Benchmark and 40 Vmax with 10X.

INteresting, killed a lot of chit with the same bullet in 223 and 22-250 over the years....

I mis-spoke and thought you had asked about Dogtowns. I'm not sure on the Midsouth Nightmares.

OK, thanks for the confirmation.

I do have a box of black plastic tipped 50gr "Nightmare Extreme" bullets from Midsouth that look like V-Max based on the secant ogive, but can't tell for sure.

Years ago (mid '70's) I worked up a load with one or the other of those Sierra match bullets in my Swift. Very accurate, but I didn't seem to be getting much expansion and in fact, had a lot of woodchucks run down the holes(which shouldn't happen.)

Regarding the OP's question, my all around varmint bullet in .224 is the 60 grain Sierra HP. Won't appeal to many because it's a flat-base bullet. Works for me because I'm not a very good shot anyway, don't really need extreme long range performance.

The 50, 53 and 60 grn V-max all seem pretty well represented. What about the 55 grn V-max? No love?

After doing a bunch of testing I changed from the 60 V-max to the 55 grn V-max. Accuracy is a little better over the 60, both just tear a little hole at 100, but the 55's have the same POI as the 55 grn PMC stuff I shoot, just a LOT better group.

So now I never need to mess with my scope no matter if I shoot handloads or factory fodder.

Any of y'all tried the 53gr VMAX? I see its got a higher BC than the 55.
