America needs to understand that our troops are not 'disposable'. Each represents a family; Fathers, Mothers, Sons, Daughters, Cousins, Uncles, Aunts... Our Citizens are our most valuable treasure; we waste far too many.

Solduc: I would NOT shoot that particular pistol. If you want something to shoot go buy a Glock in that caliber and bang away until your heart is content! Your question is not well stated but I think I understand what you are asking and again "I" would NOT shoot that gun. It will appreciate in value faster than a used gun of the same vintage. That was nice of your father-in-law to bequeath that fine gun to you and your Mrs. Hold into the wind VarmintGuy

It's up to you. But just so you know, a 50's era Browning Hi Power with the box and in good condition is worth a pretty fair bump of money.
Only you can say what it's worth to you. But you should get a reliable appraisal done on it and then decide if you want to keep it around to shoot or use the money for something else.

Cabelas is VERY likely to low ball you to a ridiculous degree. Gunbroker is your best bet to get your full value from the BHP. Yep.

High Powers were very cool guns in 1945 but have little relevance today as a carry piece. If it has value as a collector now, I'd keep it as such and preserve it.

I put a couple hundred rounds through my HP just yesterday with nary a hiccup in feeding and anything over the size of a pop can an inside of 50 yards was in severe danger of having extra holes in it. It packs almost as flat as a 1911 and only holds a few less shells than a G19. Unless I've missed something pretty serious I don't see why it can't be a viable carry gun. Hell of a lot more firepower than the J frame I usually tote.

Solduc, if it's true that you can get a couple $K for that piece (I don't know) I would definitely sell it. If you want a HP to shoot, you can still get some nice ones for half that price or less.

If the pistol has ever been shot, you're not going to hurt it or lower it's value just by shooting it a little more.
If it's truly pristine with the box value is north of $2k, but it will take a little while to get your price...but you'll get it.
If you want a shooter Hi Power, then sell it, buy a shooter grade Mk III Hi Power and pocket a grand or more.
But it's your gun, do with it as you see fit.

Just to clarify...
I've owned a few HPs and shot them in matches. The grips fit my hand like a glove, so there's that. I've built a few customs based on Belgium made commercial guns, full up with Barsto barrels, Novak sights, hard chrome. Just playing around, I only ever did a few for friends...the mistake I made was doing the first one.
If you are a fan and want to carry one, go for it...but the point I was trying to make was if I had a vintage HP NIB, I'd cash it out and buy a half dozen Glocks.

Keep and shoot it unless you really need money, it was your Grandfather Gun and I would be willing to bet he would want you to shoot it and keep it and that is why he left it to you.
A Doe walks out of the woods today and says, that is the last time I'm going to do that for Two Bucks.
