Just a matter of cost... might be able to find a new barrel to put on, or get one made. What's the reason to rebarrel?

Well i just got the gun and it seems to shoot all over the place. Its a 250-3000 take down and the bore looks good. Its what you guys call a gray rat and ive always wanted that caliber to hunt with.Ive also got one in 30-30 and it shoots great.i dont know how to tell if it a H,F,G or what.Since i really like these guns im gonna invest in the book by Mr Murray to learn more. dave

Dave.. talk to us over in the Savage forum and we'll ID it for you. Are you shooting factory 100gr bullets? Most of the pre-1960 99's were chambered in 1 in 14" twist and didn't do well with longer bullets. Try reloading with 87gr Hornady's and see what it's like. First time I took out my father-in-laws it shot 5" groups with factory ammo. Got better, but never better than 2.5". Reloaded with 87gr, and now a 1" group means I'm doing something wrong.

We leave the last two numbers x'd out. Somebody might try to get nasty with the full serial number. All we need are the beginning parts any way..
And if you really aren't happy with it, there's always folks there looking for 250's.. sell it off and pick up one you like. I'm not interested, just picked up a 1939 250 and got a 243 on layaway. Gotta go cold turkey here for a couple of months.. my safe's filling up!

Its not that im not happy with it, its just got to shoot a tighter group.I love the gun,to me its a fine piece of work, but we gotta tighten that group up and i thought that maybe one of those custom barrels might do the trick .I will also try some of the tips i read on the savage article in Rifle magazine.Next post will be on the Savage forum. dave

Dave, Time and time again on the savage forum ppl have had wild groups caused by the forarm screw being too tight. Had it happen myself. try taking the forarm off and shooting a couple of rounds.

Load up some round noses that is what mine shoot best. The tips on the spiral points makes it too long of an orgive.. trust me on this..
