model and chambering, makes the most sense for one rifle to hunt big game everything, anywhere, in the lower 48 for a man entering his 60s?

Model 20, in .308 or 7-08. Using factory ammo pushes the scales to the .308.

A Model 20 in 7-08 or .308 would indeed be a good choice, but I'm not planning on selling my Model 24 .30-06 that I started hunting with at age 43 just because I'm over 60 now.

I would go with the .284 Win if you are adamant about the "everything," but if I really didn't think I was going to shoot moose, I would drop down to a .260 Rem which would be more fun to shoot most days.

I would also consider the.284 Win as it gets the most out of a 3" chamber. At one point this was the number one ULA chambering.

If it were me I would go for a 20 in 7mm-08. I just like that round. I do not believe any rifle you pick will do you wrong. My 300WM isn't a punishing shot, however Melvin does it the recoil on any that I have shot are not bad. So if you are set up for a certain caliber go with it. All factory amo I have used shoots moa or better and a few make 1 ragged whole constantly if I do my part.

Lower 48? If you handload: .260 or .280. If not: 270.

That, though a 6.5 Creedmoor would be kinda cool too.

Given the 3.0" length of the NULA mag box, I don't think the Creedmore offers all that much over a .260.

felt recoil
06 17 to 20
308 15.8 to 18
7mm08 12 to 14
7x57 mauser 11.7 to 15.5
25-06 11 TO 12
i WOULD NOT GO BELOW A 25 CALIBER TO HUNT ELK WITH

For me it would, as I already have a heavier version.

7-08 or 7-08AI in a model 20 would get a guy around pretty well or sweet talk Melvin and do a 7saum with a #3 instead of a #2.

Why feed off the bottom creedmore is just a nik above the little lapua. A 6.5x284 is much better all around in the.264 world

It's still a 6.5mm bullet doing 6.5mm stuff. Why do the 6.5x284 when you can do the 26 Nosler?

I'm guessing a 6.5CM could/would last a man a LONG time.

More often than not, good enough is good enough.
