I picked up a very nice, clean "safe-queen" the other day and have been trying to read up. I have a bevy of 70's but they are all different, pre-post-classic etc. I thought it was in here I was able to search a Lightweight but now I can't find it and that doesn't help my CRS.... According to my "old" blue book the FWTs were made 81-94 with or without sights 22" barrel, 6 1/2 lbs. The "lightweight" was made 87-95 22" 6 1/2 lbs. The barrel left side says "Model 70 SA 243" and the right side says "lightweight". It is printed not cursive and I saw it in cursive "somewhere" (CRS). Among the web posts was something about the two being the same (fwt/ltwgt) except for the stock design and checkering. This wood is VERY handsome, red Winchester pad. Any enlightenment would be awesome. Post or PM, email etc.

I just have to say one thing:
I try to stick with the basics, they do so well. Nothing fancy mind you, just plain jane will get it done with style. You want to see an animal drop right now? Shoot him in the ear hole. BSA MAGA

Winchester/USRA cataloged the 70 Lightweight Carbines for a couple of years, starting (I think) in 1985/86. In 1986/87, they made a one year run of 70 Lightweight Carbines in 250 Savage. The have the same barrel contour as the 70 Featherweights, so you can swap stocks if the Fwt style move you more.

I think the earlier rifles had "Lightweight" in cursive?

I shot, zeroed a lightweight in .223 rem , I always wished, I had bought the thing for a cheap shooting (ammo wise)truck and or walking gun... for a hammer forged barrel it sure was accurate, tweeking the trigger was all that was done to it, Darn thing would shoot 3/4 inch and better with factory ammo. Great looking young fella. Good shooting! Is that a factory stock? So many variations!

The Lightweight is a push feed Featherweight with a different stock design. A carbine version was offered for two years. The cursive was used only for the first couple years of production.

I had one of the carbine .250 Savage Lightweights for a while. If anybody is tempted, they had the old-fashioned 1-14 rifling twist. It shot great with 100-grain Speer Hot-Cors, but anything longer was a crapshoot.
A year or so ago fitted a Lightweight stock to a Featherweight .270 barreled action, because I liked the LW stock better--and it was VERY light.

I handled one in 222 REM back in the early 90s.

I really wanted a featherweight but when this popped up I just could not fail to make an offer. If it shoots as good as it looks I have a winner for sure. John, thanks for heads up on the 250 twist. I would NEVER pass a 250 in a 70.

I also like the Lightweight stock design better than the Featherweight.
The LW grip fits me much better. The grip has a little bit of rounding on the bottom that allows my hand to move to where it wants to be. And the forend is just a little bit more filling.
