For me they do best with darker brown stocks. A BRNO ZKK 375 H&H. An FN 9.3x62. A G series M70 416 Rem. .

when is a red recoil pad appropriate? When you can't find a lime green recoil pad.

Only on Mauser's with walnut stocks! Just kidding, they look great on synthetics and Remington's also Old model 70's look good with their original red pads too:
I try to stick with the basics, they do so well. Nothing fancy mind you, just plain jane will get it done with style. You want to see an animal drop right now? Shoot him in the ear hole. BSA MAGA

When you grew up watching your father and uncle hunt with old Ruger M77 rifles. The red pad always stood out to me, so I like it on most my wood stocked rifles...

Yep, that's the one. Except one had a one-piece Leupold base and rings with a gold ring vxII 3-9x40 and the other with weaver base and rings with a cheap tasco scope from the 70's. It is my hope to own both of them someday, but I imagine my cousin will want his dad's gun.

Have a number of rifles with red recoil pads and I do like their looks. Only problem with mine is they are on old rifles and the pads have hardened. Not much give to them. A couple of them had the X waffle thru the sides and with these I've cut out the waffle and inserted a block of soft rubber. LOL, cut and shaped from 99 cent black flip flop rubber sandals.
