For my money, the Browning Superposed Lightnings and the Charles Daly Miroku guns.

Superposed
Beretta
Merkel
Japanese Daly
Remington

There were some hi dollar guns like Piotti, as well as one of the Englsh makes but never saw any around. There were also some relatively plain o/u by Marlin and savage/stevens. The 5 above were the most common

Beretta "S" series, both the more expensive sidelocks (S2, S3) and the boxlocks like the S55, S56. The later are still available as bargains. The boxlock ASE and ASELs are also very nice.

The Winchester 101 was pretty well thought of. There's an outfit called Classic Doubles that specializes in them. Never used one myself.

I'm real happy with my old Beretta BL-4, which I think is the S55 mentioned by Mesabi, under another name. The shallow action makes for easy one-handed carry, which makes it nicer to use than a lot of O/Us in terrain that has you moving briars with one hand while you're walking.

The 101 is my first choice because Winchester says they are fine for steel shot... I have quite a few and the Winchesters and Berettas fit me best by a lot.
