Hello all,

I spotted this bolt on a gun show table. I saw the cone nose and the $50 price tag so I grabbed it and put it in my pocket, assuming it was a pre64

Like a lot of my gun show finds, closer inspection showed it was something else. The dimensions are pre-64 model 70, it fits a receiver and a firing pin assembly screws in, but look at the bolt handle, particularly the casting mark and the flat bottom.

Anyone know what rifle this came from?

Looks kinda like a modified 1903 Springfield bolt to me. Just on a quick looksee. But I know it's not

My best guess is it's from a classic CRF. The bolt handles were cast and brazed onto the bolt body of these rifles. It's not a pre 64, a post 64 pushfeed, 1999 montana, or Dakota 76 IMHO. If you look at this pushfeed bolt from an XTR fwt, it also has a stamp in it:

Hard to see, but it's there. The classics were also stamped in the casting.. Don't have a good picture of any of my past classic CRF bolts though.. Someone else may enlighten us further though...

Looks like a pre-64 that has been parkerized or refinished in some way.

Possibly just a pre-64 bolt that hasn't been finished. A production overrun.

Shape of the handle is all wrong for a pre'64, just look at the upper bolt in the pic in the OP's post.

Never saw a pre 64 bolt with the number 2 in a circle embossed on the handle....

That looks like a "factory" replacement bolt from the 1970's for pre 64 Win 70's. My friend has a couple. I will see him in April if not before to compare. I don't know if Winchester made those or someone else.

Classics don't have the bolt guide do they?

Thanks guys. Sbrmike, that sounds like the likely answer. The bolt body (with the pre-64 bolt guide) is definitely pre-64, and the bolt handle is definitely cast and early post-64 in appearance

Well I saw him/it today. Of course I forgot my camera, but the bolt in question is identical to those replacement bolts from the 1970's. I can't remember their origin or source. We are thinking factory Winchester replacement bolts.

OK, I did take my camera but the pictures stink. The bolt is identical to the ones my friend had. They are definitely "factory" replacement bolts made by Winchester in the 1970's. They were a one time run. My friend also had some lunch bucket pre 64 Win 70 bolts in the white that did not have the extractor collar groove machined into them. These were not tool room bolts.
