Need to upgrade my shotgun selection, and the local LH fodder for a basic pump is skimpy.
Should I get a BPS?
Should I hold out or order a LH?
Or should I just get a right hand and rock on?

I would shoot that till my fingers bled.
Not sure the birds would feel any difference, though.

The Win model 12 controls work great for a lefty, LH safety available, slide release is on LH side.
Never had an issue with gas on RH side as you control the opening speed. Lots of issues with a RH semi auto.
I have a BPS in 12 I may sell its perfect for a LH, if you like a bottom eject.

Get the one that fits you best, since fit is so important on a shotgun.
If it has a tang safety that's gravy. If it's a Remington 870 then a LH model would be great (do they still make those?) but if righties are all you can find the trigger guard safety can be switched over, don't know about other brands.
Some brands of shotguns have cast off for righties so mount poorly for lefties. I've been using a Remington 1100 with switched safety for about 50 years now. It has a "position neutral" stock with no cast either way. The 870's have the same stock dimensions as the 1100's so are right/left hand neutral. I also have an 870 as a home defense weapon, and it mounts and points just as well as the 1100, which is the main reason I got it.
Gunnery, gunnery, gunnery. Hit the target, all else is twaddle!

I have the 3.5" BPS and it feels solid and handles well but is long and heavy compared to my double guns. It has gotten relegated to Turkey and Goose hunting mostly. Occasionally I short shuck it when first switching to the 3.5 inch shells but get used to them after awhile.
I would say get the standard 3" model for an all around shotgun it will handle better. The 3.5" shells are not needed most of the time and are brutal to shoot if you have your back to a tree. I don't notice the recoil as much when wearing a heavy jacket.

The Ithaca Model 37 and Browning BPS will give you the widest selection of options (gauges, barrel lengths, finishes, etc). I have and hunt with both, though I prefer the top tang safety of the BPS. Grew up shooting 870 Wingmaster's and never had a problem with them either, even before swapping in the LH safeties.
Semi-auto's I'm not real versed in as I never really saw the point in them other than to separate you from more of your hard earned money. A good pump-gun shooter can shoot darn near as fast as any auto-loader, and a pump is much less complex meaning less chances of a mechanical failure.
Bought my first auto-loader this past year (a lightly used 1100), but find I still prefer to grab one of my pump guns over it when heading out hunting.

I would look for an older Wingmaster 870. The new ones can't hold a candle compared to the ones made in the early 70's. Make sure it has the silver shell flipper. You can find them every so often on gunbroker.
Mine only can shoot 2 3/4" shells but I can do anything my buddy's 3" can.

BPS pump 20ga and Benelli lefty 12ga auto... Been happy with both and have had the BPS over 20 years. The browning is nicely engraved. Very nice, love the top safety.

Wanted a BPS, but it doesn't fit me. Very satisified with the Mossberg 500. Being able to adjust the stock with shims makes a huge difference. I should add that I use the RH 500. Works better for lefty than the LH version.

Ithaca 37? Or you could go with the best of the bunch:
I try to stick with the basics, they do so well. Nothing fancy mind you, just plain jane will get it done with style. You want to see an animal drop right now? Shoot him in the ear hole. BSA MAGA

After shooting a RH 870 for 30 years, I bought a LH 870 cheap. I thought I was the luckiest guy around until I really tried using it. I ended up selling it and going back to the RH model. The LH drove me nuts.
They say everything happens for a reason. For me that reason is usually because I've made some bad decisions that I need to pay for.
