ok, picked up a used 454 SRH that's been chopped to 5". they had a Toklat too, but this one has the replaceable front sight so I can do night sights, while I couldn't find night sight sets for the Toklat.

now I need input from the collective. this will be a backcountry security blanket.

first, best grip for large hands" these feel OK, but I'm sure there is better out there.

second, Diamond D guide's choice or Kenai chest rig? is thee a clear winner? currently leaning to the Kenai.

last and best. what to load for it. is there a somewhat standard heavy cast load for the 454? what's the best powder to have on hand for the 454?

You made a great choice! Hogue's Tamer grips are really good and a sight better than the grips. Another shoulder/chest rig to look at is 7x Leather's. I like them more than the Kenai and Diamond D rigs.

Funny this thread is here, just not an hour ago fired my Casull with a greatly reduced load.

10 grs Power Pistol under a 270 gr Thunderhead bullet in WW 45 Colt brass, it was like riding in a fat ladies lap in a Mercedes Limo, very comfortable.

The standard load, not so much, it uses enough WW 296 to power the 335 gr Cast Performance WFNGC bullet to 1585 fps, not fun!

And Congrats on the new revolver Toad.

I have exact pistol. I also had it cut to accept moon clips so I can shoot 45 acp as well. I have mine in a guides choice with Hogue grips. I took the hogues off and put the factory grips off as I like thelook and feel better.

Ive shot heavy 45 colt and plain Winchester 454's in mine and honestly those 45's might be a little hotter. Ive not tried full bore 454's yet.

Mine is a .480 and I like the grips you have better than anything else I've tried from Hogue, Eagle, etc.. It's what I keep coming back to. Below is a set I got from Ebay that came from Thailand. For backcountry use in Montana, I'd probably do little more than a 300-325gr WFN at 1000-1200fps. No need to beat yourself up with full .454 loads.

I like the Diamond D Guide's Choice but 7x is better.

7X is from Ennis MT. that's where I bought the handgun.

I hadn't heard of them 'till now.

Hogue tamers feel much better on this gun than the originals.
