Whelen Nut's weekly emails & phone calls must have worked. Thank you Scott Walker! Wisconsin hunters no longer have to wear number tags on their backs while they're in the woods. That was one of 58 bills signed Tuesday by Gov. Scott Walker.
Many states have stopped making hunters wear the tags, which are used to register deer and other animals.
The Wisconsin Force group, which is associated with the NRA, calls the back-tags an "obstacle" to enjoying the state's sporting heritage while opponents say the new law makes it harder to identify hunters who trespass and break other laws.
That argument did not gain traction among legislators as the bill passed the Assembly by a voice vote and the Senate by a wide 28-4 margin.Link: http://www.hudsonstarobserver.com/n...charged-waterboarding-girlfriend-12-more

Could it be a sign our WDNR might finally be coming out of the dark ages? No more changing back tags from one jacket to another several times a day. No more back tags scraping on trees while sitting on a deer stand! No more losing the D@%M things and having to get a duplicate. Thank you WI legislators and Scott Walker!

Thank God! Not that it was a PITA but it kinda was. Noisy against a tree, switching from jacket to back pack, and not to mention the people who read your back tag probably did it with a scoped rifle.
Camp is where you make it.

They were green every year so those that think it makes hunting without a license easier are full of crap.

Wayne,
What are the earliest years of your collection? It starts in the 1940s. So, you were in your 20's when you started? Seriously, that's pretty cool. I've contemplated a large collage/mural made of the back tags (similar to license plate art). There has been quite the variety of colors over the years.

Ha, no...for some reason my maternal grandmother saved a bunch of grandads back tags and I just filled in with mine. I don't have the metal leg tags to go along with the back tags because we were and are good shots. I can see you putting together something artistic Mr. Creative Director...

Yippee, my back tag collection value just went thru the roof. I have all my dad's back tags from Pennsylvania dating back to 1949. Those big azzed things you guys had to wear in Sisconnie looked to be a real PIA, but I guess when most of the guys wearing them are a bottle and a half up after breakfast, who gives a schidt?

I don't have the metal leg tags to go along with the back tags because we were and are good shots. I've been checking some of them out on Ebay in recent weeks. A lot of series of four/five have all the accompanying metal tags. I'm guessing those guys were much better card players and drinkers than they were hunters.

I've got a schit load of them, at least back to the early 50s. All of mine have never been worn though, i thought of it as more of a suggestion than anything :-D

Funny how that works. I never knew guys DIDN'T wear back tags until I moved to Minnesota from Ohio. I also never knew Sunday hunting was legal until I came up here too.
