Thanks for the info RHC.
One issue that I've run into with ringmounts that utilize a recoil pin is the inability to mount certain scopes forward enough to establish proper eye relief. Those ringmounts have to be mounted at the very end of the rear dovetail and do not allow the scope to be mounted forward enough for certain individuals/scopes. There are a few example pics in this thread of scopes mounted on rifles where that would be the case (OregonMuley's, Zeissman's, mine and Shrapnel's pic of the mounted Leupold). The Leupold ringmounts allow some flexibility in rear ring positioning that allow the scope to be positioned more forward to establish proper eye relief if you run into that problem. Or you can use base/ring mounts like the Redfield, Optilocks, Conetrol, S&K, Talley, Millet.

Watch your bolt handle clearance. You may not be able to lower the scope without having it very close to the handle.(note the black tape on Shraps Ziess)I have an older L579 that I had that issue with. The handle would clear but it could also contact the ocular if you were not careful.Sako made changes to the newer L579 versions that solved that.
Sorry,I drank the Sako-Aid.My opinion may be biased. bh444

I usually have the opposite problem though of needing the scope to move farther rearward. In that case the Leupolds are a slight hinderence since the front mount needs to be about half way down the dovetail before it will tighten. Another option is to grind or drive the recoil lug off the Optilock Ringmount. I do like that it is a bit beefier than the Leupolds and tightens anywhere on the rails, but it isn't as low or as light. I love Sako rifles but find the mounts to be slightly problematic, sometimes not allowing the exact scope you want. I really wish someone made a good Picatinny rail that mounted on the dovetails,or they would just machine such a rail into the receiver instead of the tapered dovetail.

I really wish someone made a good Picatinny rail that mounted on the dovetails. That would certainly increase options. I have no experience with them but Valdada does offer a spendy Picatinny rail for the Sako 75/85's. http://www.valdada.com/sako-75-85-1piece-mil-spec-steel-picatinny-adjustable-base/

Yes, I've done that to the Sako Optilock ring mounts. No need to grind the pin though as it punches out quite easily.

Another vote here for the Leupold ringmount. I used a pair to mount a VX-2 2-7 on a .243. Pretty low and put the scope at just the right height for my old, fat, face. Then, like a dummy I gave the rifle to my son.
Stay away from the mounts that slide on the dovetail and use a setscrew that digs into the receiver. Lots of nice old Sakos have the screw marks on top. A kludge for sure.
What fresh Hell is this?

Oregon- I prefer the original sako mounts on my rifles. I found it harder to find mounts high enough for the larger objective scopes. for me, a 2.5-8 leup or a 3-9x36 swaro would be great on the 308. probably medium sako rings.

The Sako Optilock ring mounts only come in one size which is LOW. They are high enough for 50mm objectives. These are the one piece mounts and are the lowest in the Optilock range. There seems to be a lot of confusion with Optilock mounts. I think this is mainly because many people don't realize there are two completely different mounts with the same Optilock name. The Optilock ring mounts are the simplest, lightest and best of the two Optilock systems IMHO. Unless you need to mount a scope with a 56mm objective.

The Optilock ringmounts might work with some 50mm scopes on some rifles. They were too low to mount a Kahles 3-10X50 CL on my 270 Sako 75 Finnlight.

That's interesting to hear. A friend mounted a 50mm scope (think it was a Kahles) on his Finnlight .308. The shorter action no doubt helped the scope objective to be positioned further forward on the tapered barrel.

R_H : Contact them. They make them when they have 4-5 orders.
Max objective size is 40mm I belive.

Quick update - I went ahead and ordered the Leupold Sako one piece ringmounts in Low. Think it turned out pretty nice, height is just right for the 6x36 and overall I think they look good and should be plenty sturdy enough for the scope.

You see how the front ringmount needed to be down the dovetail a bit to tighten. To me the Leupolds are about the top choice unless you wind up with a short tube scope or need to move that front mount farther back. In that case the Optilock ringmount is better. If I were mounting scopes over 20 oz on a heavy kicker,I would also feel better about the mounts that incorporate a recoil lug. I wouldn't anticipate any problems on your set up.

Yup, with that scope they work fine. Per the instructions that came with the ring mounts it says you should center them on the dovetail to have best results. I did that and everything worked fine, could see the front one being an issue with some other scopes though??? But overall should be good to go!

Haven't had the chance to make it to the range yet, but I imagine it will shoot just fine. This was my dad's rifle, he always had good luck with it the 40 years he carried it. He passed away a little more than 2 years ago but still tough without him.

Sorry to hear that but hopefully hunting with his rifle will bring back a lot of good memories.
