Killed my first bull elk with a 180gr in 30.06 out of a Ruger M77R back in 1979 with one.
Did the job then, and I'm sure that they would work today.
It's all about shot placement. You do your job, and they'll do theirs. The psp Core Lokts people buy today aren't the ones that built the reputation. Many of them have much thinner jacket side walls than in the past.

I bought 4 boxes of 180 grain 30-06 Core Lokt at Wal Mart for $17.94 a box, the cheapest I've seen. I know a lot of hunters hate Core Lokt (and Wal Mart for that matter) but I have had good luck with them. Wal Mart Core Lokt sale $25.88Only 7 left! at Anchorage Must be the shipping. It costs 44% more, sounds like everything else in Alaska.

I tried some 130 gr Remington Core Lokt's in my .270 Win. And they were 150 fps slower and the groups at 100 yards off the bench were 40% larger than Federal blue box. I don't think I will ever shoot a factory cartridge at a big game animal, but if I did the Remington would be my last choice, given their current quality. Too bad, they used to be a lot better, but that was 30 years or more ago.

I find them WAY better than what they made 30 years ago.

My best friend bought a Savage FP110 in 30-06 for a great price. As Core Lokt 150 grain bullets were on sale I bought a hundred and we cobbled up a starting load. Normally we shoot 165 to 180 grains but with the less than $10 per hundred (pre 2007) I said what the heck. We had little to loose.
Kenny put 5 into less than an inch! Ecstatic, we packed up from the range giving each other television high-fives for our luck, and headed back to the garage for cleaning and reloading. When we got back, we found that Kenny had tossed the notes with our reloading data out with the range residue.
It took us two years to recreate that near perfect load.
