"The Silent Majority is rising once again. Will it rise enough, and with sufficiently cohesive political support to catapult a candidate into office? Maybe. The trajectory is promising, but the polls show that -- at present -- Trump may be in a tough position against Hillary Clinton for the general election. However, it is still too early to read the tea leaves for the head-to-head matchup. At this point in the 1980 race, Reagan was getting whipped in the polls at a 2:1 margin by Jimmy Carter. That all changed by election day." Except Reagan Democrats were voting for a conservative. You mean a former democrat? History's a biatch, ain't it? As Reagan said: "I did not leave the Democratic Party, the Democratic Party left me." Reagan and Kennedy and Eisenhower would be considered extremely Conservative today. Back then, they were just normal folks.

Except Reagan Democrats were voting for a conservative. They were voting for someone who promised to revive American industry and advance policies with only the interest of America and Americans in mind.

Conservatism means a lot more than pro 2nd amendment, anti abortion, and going to war at every opportunity.
In fact, most Republicans won't support true conservative principals.
They'll get behind Nationalism *big time*, however.
They'll throw hugh rock and roll rallies when a candidate talks Nationalism.
Trump is a Nationalist.
Reagan was a Nationalist.

By 1980 standards Reagan was a Moderate , since then the Democrates and RINO's have moved well to the left making Mr. Reagan seem more conservative. In Modern day politics he would be seen as an unelectable Conservative. And Kennedy would have been viewed as a Conservative provided his notions did not sway left with time. Imagine how Teddy Roosvelt would be viewed today by republican voters. He set aside land for conservation, took hunting land away for our own good and set up The national park system. Consider what people would think of that these days, you would have Protests like mad declaring the President is out of control.

Teddy broke up big business to the point that they kicked him out of the party even though he was wildly popular with the electorate. The republicans had hand picked a more business friendly candidate to be their guy.
Kennedy would be right wing by today's measure, no doubt about it.
Both parties currently have been pulled to the extremes by special interest groups, leaving the middle wide open. Whoever can control the middle will rule it all, and be able to play each side against the other, marginalizing the far left or far right.

Trump left the democrat party a couple of years before in order to take advantage of his preferred voters. Trump has been a registered Republican since 2009. First, not true since he switched to an independent in 2011 and then switched to the Republican party again in 2012. Second, he was seriously considering running in 2012. http://thehill.com/video/campaign/198319-trump-romney-lacks-the-courage-to-participate-in-his-debate12/09/2011 - Trump on Thursday maintained that he wants to keep his "options open" when it comes to jumping into the race.
