Lots of good comments so I appreciate that. Certainly those who said it doesn't need a companion are probably the most correct. But rifle loonies are always thinking of the next rifle.
BobinNH made a good point about a big bore - if it is really needed. But you know how that goes.
I am thinking 30 caliber magnum on up or maybe make 33 caliber the minimum.
Mule Deer's suggestion on the 9.3x62 really has appeal as a 375H&H alternative.
When the bigger bore is needed, it probably should be a no nonsense get the job done cartridge. Probably should be walnut/blue and a metric number.
We'll see.

A daughter to drive it with a daddy to spot the game and enjoy something brown from Kentucky with a cork to celebrate the steaming carcass hanging at the end of the day.

I'd pair it with Norma brass a 160 gameking and H4350.In fact I had to build a 7X57 just so I could use up my 7X57 Norma brass and 300 160 gameking bullets I had laying around.

I've got several hundred 168 berger hunting VLD that may get paired also depending on how well this rifle likes them. Grin

Sounds like a good plan.

For N.A., you don't need a 375 H&H, but it fits the heritage. Do you back off to a .338WM? A 300WM? Or do you say "one and done" because brownies and grizzlies take up a very small part of the big game menu.

Well, you could pair it with a stainless version so you have a fair-weather/foul -weather combo. But I believe a stainless 7x57 is apostasy, so the other more logical pairing would be to choose a Ruger #1 in one's preferred configuration..... blued of course.

Or.........just get a 275 Rigby. Brass is easier to find in some quarters and you won't be handicapped with having to shoot 173 grain round nose bullets. wink

Then again, perhaps what you want is a 7mm-08. There is no heresy in shooting a stainless version. Yea, it might even be preferable. And of course you will then be able to shoot "lead-free" bullets, something which is prohibited in the older chamberings. whistle

Agree!!

For my use, is THE 7x57 load for Big Game. Big Deer, Big wild Boar and game like them. Many or most African Antelopes. At 2600-2650 f/s, nothing more is needed. Like the .30-06 with the 200 grs Partition. Or the .375 H%H with the 300 grs Partition.

About pairing the 7x57, something like 9,3x62 or .375 H&H is in order. For me, the .375 H&H I allready have.
Another combination for that two: 7x57-160 or 154 grs- 2700/2800 f/s and .375 H&H-270 or 260 grs-2700/2800 fps, respectively.

Okay - Y'all Xplain something to me. I have a 67 Y O mind but I view things from a younger perspective.

WHY is 175 NP preferred or better than 150 OR 160 NP

IMO the lighter bullet can be faster--flatter and still do all the penetration and damage necessary.

I bracketed my 7x57R with a 9.3x72R on one side and a great little predator round 6.5x58R Sauer(like a 25-35 Win) on the other, and all topped with SxS 16 gauges.

After the first shot the rest are just noise.

jwall.

Spot on. No need to go above 154 grains in the 7x57. In my experience you start running into terminal stability problems post impact with heavier spitzers and lack of expansion with premium 175's.

Match with a .300 H&H or .375 H&H. Both have done the job for over a century now.

I matched mine up with 6x57, 8x57, and a 9.3x57. I like x57s..

I think so too. However for 'nostalgia' I can see why the 175 is considered KOOL.

Build an old school pair: .275 Rigby for a light rifle and a .318 Nitro Express or .333 Jeffery for more serious social occasions. Or take it in the opposite direction and have a 7x57 for anything short of huge beasts that can eat you or stomp you into a red paste, paired with a 5.6x35R Vierling (.22 Hornet) for more fun than you'll have in a New Orleans cathouse. (Well, maybe anyway...)

Actually, pairing it with a nicely balanced 16 gauge double makes a lot of sense, too.

Shoot in matches. In competition.

Call the NRA at this site and find out where there are matches.

Shooting competition.

Here we are shooting at our club. We also shoot matches with 22 rifles and pistols indoors, at night, in cold weather.

There is also a junior team.

Lemme try this.... grin

The trajectory of the 175 NPT is more than flat enough for kills easily out to 300 yards but the big draw for me was two fold:

1) Lower velocity meant less meat damage and I cut up my own game...hate to drag a heavy critter out then throw away a bloodshot quarter of it and the biggie....

2) I used my 7x57 extensively here in Montana and in africa. Our deer, elk, and bear seasons coincide, and in Africa you never know on a given day if you'll be shooting a 40 lb. duiker or a 700 pound kudu.......the 175 NPT covered all your bases without a second thought. grin

What to pair with a 7mm Mauser?

A good goosestep.
