Was the 1920 ever available in an upgraded version? Just bought a .250, SN 4558, that I think has been nicely restocked as I have only seen/owned the ones with minimal checkering.

Please do post pictures. To answer your question, not that I am aware of - but I'm no expert.

I would say non-original stock. The lines of it look very factory, right up to the schnabel where it sort of flies off the track. Definitely not factory checkering. All in all a pretty nice job of work.

The checkering is/was a dead giveaway as all the examples I've seen had very sparse coverage.. I wasn't sure if Savage ever produced an upgraded 1920...

The finish on this stock looks and feels like the French polish on some of my Deluxe pre-war Winchesters...whoever restocked it did a fine job...

Are you sure somebody didn't "whittle" down the factory wood into a more svelt stock? I can see that with the schnabel, but the drop of the comb looks lower than factory stocks. Unless someone cut that down too making the butt plate smaller than the normal height.

I dont think there is enough wood in a factory stock to her a schnabble that big? If it were mine I would cut that off and have a rounded piece of ebony put in its place.

Oh yeah, that is a nice rifle! And if that was the final price it was an excellent price too!

I don't know if the schnabel is larger than normal, but I do think that enough wood has been removed behind it to emphasize is size and shape. I also think it's been somewhat reshaped too. It's nicely done work but it also brings up the same question posted on the thread about the late 99 in .358. That is, is the rifle a factory or non-factory product?


PS - And what's up with the wood on the wrist. The rear tang looks like it stands a good 1/8-inch over the stock! That's what got me thinking the factory stock may be reshaped on this 1920.

My gut feeling is there wouldn't be enough meat in the fore end to reshape it to make such an overblown schnabel. But, who's to say a later heavier stocked 20/26 stock wasn't re-shaped into a slim earlier style. (Said re-shaping would answer the question of tang metal proudness too.) Personally I find that schnabel to be a bit grotesque. IMO smaller conservative schnabels are classier.

Also, has anyone ever seen wood as pretty as that on factory 1920 stocks (or non-special order 99 stocks too for that matter)? I'll guess they exist but I haven't stumbled onto any.

I'll repeat the sentiment that overall it's a handsome rifle, one that I would gladly tuck in beside my other Savages.

My 20/26 has some nice fiddle back in the butt (that almost makes me blush saying that) but nothing that looks like feathering. I almost said feather crotch but that made me blush too...
