Might be sent out there to work for 3 months and I got a few questions for the gang here....
First....Is the state of California gonna tax what I make when I'm there?
Second....Is it gonna be cold?
Third...How is the town of Folsom?Crime? What is there to do?
Ain't never been there and I'd appreciate any info on the area...
Thanks in advance...
Bart

They'll probably tax what you make, but I guess it depends on whether you're being paid by your employer in Texas or working for a California employer. When I first moved to AK I was telecommuting. They still charged me state income tax even though I was working out of state.

I'm the wrong one to ask about cold. It's just North of Sacramento, not real high elevation. You aren't going to see snow, but it isn't an LA beach either.

I don't know that there is much to do there. There is in off road park for dirt bikes, 4wheelers and racing karts. Not sure if they're are any rental options. I ran my karts there a few time, it was by far the best track in Norcal at the time.

It's close enough to Sacramento that I'd look into what you can do there. You can also run up to the South Shore of Lake Tahoe, and then cross into Nevada if you need to hit a Casino. I'm thinking you aren't a skier, but there are some good hills around there. You're also close enough to get to Yosemite for a weekend. Everybody should see Yosemite at least once.

Are you with the prison system?

Folsom is is sort of a desolate area in between Sacramento and the Sierras.

You said you would be there for three months, which three?

If it is the winter, winters are pretty mild, a chill in the air, but can easily have t-shirt weather any month of the year. Summer time is hot...well Texas hot.

As far as things to do, if there isn't a lot of snow spend a lot of time in the Sierra, make a couple of trips to Lake Tahoe, take a cruise out on the big lake, it is beautiful. Hit the casinos there take in a buffet, and take the drive around the lake. Driving around the lake with maybe a stop in Emerald Bay could take a half a day.

Getting to Tahoe you can go three ways, HWY 50, 80, or cut over to 88. I would cut over to 88 to 89 on the way up, 50 on the way home. If there is snow, 80 might be the only choice.

To the west, you have the Devils lair, San Francisco. ignore the loons and hit pier 39 for a day, there is a tour of an old WWII submarine, take the Alcatraz tour eat out on the pier...expensive, but it is only once.

Make the trip to Yosemite, pictures do not do it justice.

I'm betting CA will tax you alright, they don't miss many chances.

Just guessing here, Yosemite 2-2.5 hours away, SF 2 hours, Tahoe 1.5 hours.

I work for At&t and don't understand how they can tax me if I don't live there...I'm not represented by anyone in California,so I don't see how they can legally tax me on what I make while working there on a temporary job assignment....
I'll be there starting next week so my deer season is cut way short....But for the chance to make some pretty big bucks...I'll take the green kind every time...
I'm not sure if I'm going yet...Probably find out tomorrow....I've also gotta fly out there...Not looking forward to that either....But I do like going to places that I've not been before....Hope it happens...

Well I could be wrong on that, but if your check is being written by the AT&T branch out here I couldn't imagine them not taking payroll taxes out, however if your check is to be cut from the Texas branch, maybe not.

The company going to put you up, get you a vehicle?

Well, you can't beat seeing Yosemite, Alcatraz, Tahoe, and maybe walking across the Golden Gate just once in a lifetime.

Good luck with it.

I work for At&t Southwest (the old SouthwesternBell) and my paycheck actually comes from St.Louis...Go figger...But I don't pay state income tax....I think that the State Constitution forbids a state income tax here in Texas....
The company is going to put us in a hotel room and truck our work trucks from Austin....
I think that Yosimite and SF will be a must see...Hope to catch a glimps of a jumper from the Golden Gate Bridge ...

Bart, you might ask around and get hooked up for a chinook salmon trip on the Sacramento River, I think they have some winter runs there.

Well, speaking of fitting it, if you head to SF leave your cowboy hat in the truck, folk up there might get the way wrong idea.

Folsom's not too bad. A lot of people consider it one of Sacramento's better burbs, which as you will see, isn't saying much. Sacramento itself is a high crime dump. I lived there for 16 years and I think it is the armpit of the western United States, the rotten one. Stay away from downtown, Del Paso Heights, Oak Park, North Highlands, Rio Linda, and pretty much everywhere else between the hours of 2PM until 6AM. Its dangerous, nasty and unsafe. The slime sleeps from 6AM til about 2 so you are relatively secure. The local government is the most liberal east of San Francisco. Trust me, stay in Folsom and be sure to lock your doors all the time. Good luck. I have never been so glad to escape a place in my life.

Well no, as long as you tear the sleeves off at the shoulders, and then maybe roll up the cuffs on your jeans...you'll do just fine.

Folsom isnt such a small town anymore, its an honest to goodness Burb of Sacramento. And dont let chuckles scare you, Sacramento has some redeeming values and that means a lot coming from me, because I was a Paramedic in Sacramento for 16 years and Ive seen the worst that Sacramento has to offer. Rio Linda is rather upscale now (with a few exceptions), but do avoid Del Paso Heights, Oak Park and Meadowview (not that youd have any reason to ever go there in the first place).

Theres a good range out off of Ione road, Sacramento Shooters, or something like that. 1000 yard rifle, 200 yard pistol silhouette, 50 yard pistol, Skeet, etcDownright nice place to shoot. PM me when you get there and Ill give you directions.

Take a drive up to Lake Tahoe while youre there, but make sure you know what the weather is going to be like. California has REAL mountains, and if it snows, you can find yourself camping out in your vehicle on the side of the roadThat sucks!! Tahoe is beautiful, but try to go there during the week, because it fills up on the weekends. Again, PM me if you plan on taking a trip to Tahoe (my wife is from Tahoe, and well hook you up with all the cool sights)

If you get the chance, go see YosemiteIt really is one of the most beautiful sights in the world. San Francisco is really not my cup of tea, but it does attract many people. I used to sail a lot in the bay, but thats all that really interested me in San Francisco. Theres some Naval museums (USS Hornet, USS Pampinito) that are interesting if youre into that sort of stuff (I am).

Sutters mill is about a 35 minute drive from Folsom and its pretty there. Nice little hike to the top of the hill. Pick up a sandwich at Togos (you want to try Togos) and head up there for a long lunch one day.

If you want to head into Sacramento, PM me again and Ill hook you up with all the great restaurants (Steakhouses, Mexican, Micro-Brewerys etc.) Good eatsTheres also some good eats in Folsom (Cattlemans Steakhouse is very close by). Petes Pizza on 19th and J street is worth the trip into SacIts outstanding Pizza and the one thing I miss the most about Sacramento. In fact, any time I fly to Sacramento, its my first stopAnd Im not exaggerating.

If you plan on attending Church on Sundays, let me know which flavor you prefer and Ill give you directions. I guess you can just tell me what things you like to do and Ill get you heading in the right direction.

Oh, and on the subject of taxation, since you're there for only 3 weeks, it's doubtful you'll have to pay, but that's really a question for your employer.

I own a publically traded l.p. called cedar fair. Among other things it owns knotts berry farm. I get maybe a 100dollars a year in distributions, or which a couple of bucks are attributable to knotts berry farm. I haven't even been in kalifornica for years, I live in arizona. A couple of years ago I get a letter from kalifornica wanting a copy of my federal tax return, and threatening me with dire penalities for not filing a california tax return because of that couple of bucks.
I basically wrote them a nice letter back saying extradite me, for the three bucks i got from that investment.
I was not going to send them my federal return, I wasn't a citizen there, didn't plan on going there, so go have sex with a duck. I got a letter a few months later stating that they were not going to pursue it.

Used to live in Folsom. Absolutely loved it. Lived there 1998-2001. Went on vacation, forgot to lock the door-no problem. Little crime. Cute downtown, nice restaurants. Scott's Seafood was a nice evening out. Winter days are cool-usually in the 60's, nights in the upper 40's. A fair amount of rain. Sierras at your doorstep-bring skis! Really no need to go to Sacramento, but it ain't all that bad. Grew up in LA, hate it now, but Sacto one of the more liveable cities in CA IMO. Local populace is suprisngly conservative (compared to the LA/SF locales). Very family oriented. If the job was OK, I'd go back in a heartbeat. Lots of stuff do do in the Sierras, Napa is close by, lots of history (Sutter's Mill, Mark Twain country, etc). Watch out-you might like it!
