After years of wanting one, I finally got a .35 Remington barrel for my Contender carbine. I called up JD Jones at SSK and was told they only had one barrel with the correct sized hole through it, a stainless one. I asked to have it chambered to the .35 Rem, cut to 18" and given a matte finish. Also asked for a T'SOB mount and rings.
After a two week wait the barrel arrived. The Burris 2x7 was clamped in the rings, a few patches were pushed through the bore and 30 cartridges loaded. Off to the range...
First off were some older handloads normally used in my Super14 barrel, BTW headspace was virtually identical in both barrels. Once I got on paper at 100 yards the 150 CoreLokts at ~2500 fps grouped around 1.5". Then the 200RN Hornadys over 44.0 grains of Leverevolution. Imagine my surprise (and pleasure) when four groups averaged under 1". The best group - 1/2". I'm going to really enjoy this little rifle!
I picked up a new Contender this weekend in pistol form. It is a .22 Hornet and it came with a .44 Mag. barrel. Both are 14". The .35 Remington is one of my favorite cartridges. I only have a Marlin lever in it and it is really accurate. I think the 14" .35 barrel would be an ideal combination for short range work on deer and pigs. That will be my next purchase. Your carbine sounds like a keeper. That's a short light combination which I like. The accuracy you got from your barrel seems to me to be great and about what I have seen from other quality barrels in this caliber. I guess the old .35 just keeps on chunkin.
Man, that barrel looks stubby. I have an OEM 16 1/2" .35 Rem barrel. Need to take it out more often and need to get one of those fancy thumbhole stocks.
I would definitely be interesting to see what it'll do with the new wonder powders like CFE-223, Lever or TAC. You get chrono data with Lever? Those 150 Remmy PSPCL's shoot very well in my barrel.
IN law changed, 4 yr test period. Looks like my Super 16 .35 Rem is gonna sit in the safe.........yeah, 5 cartridges in reg HP rifles signed into law (intent anyway, they were not exact on naming so could open it for more ex .300 is what they said, they didn't say ".300 win mag").
So out comes the .243 win (".243" one on the list) Ruger #1.
I did swap one TC frame back to handgun, as I scored a .223 Super 14" bbl for $100. Ideally, a .357 magnum 14" and leave it on all the time (varmints and deer).
If IN allows HP rifle after 4 yrs, with no "private land" requirement, I won't need my .35 rem............will probably convert that rifle to .22 magnum.
But that depends on if I score a Rem 760 in .35 Rem
The ol' .35 is just too cool not to have one around.
It's just .080" Kydex. Secured by Velcro. Fuzzy strip on top of comb (rolls a bit down the sides). Two strips of the hook, one on each ear of the cheekpiece.
It looks a little funky, but with the depth of the ears allows a few "settings". Could take a little off since it is where it needs to be, has a bit of extra.
Stays put and doesn't mod the stock. And was cheap
Thanks, I could buzz maybe .75 off each ear. Too lazy to mess with it more.
Here's another version I did, attached with RTV. Had to fill the cavity with epoxy. Then RTV secured it.
Proly go with a wooden version of this next go around, screw it to the stock (from the top)
Looks better IMHO
BBl is 24" 513T chambered on the shorter side for ??? match ammo. Coworker made it, has since passed. It's my CB rig. Might have it reamed for reg .22lr eventually.
Factory Rynite stock is thin, feels way better to me than the thicker laminated stuff. But the comb sucks. Gotta do something. Thin walnut, the ears by the receiver prone to crack. Plastic for the win. Maybe film dip in woodgrain? Krylon is way cheaper.
BTW, my .35 wears an aluminum cougar grip cap. Swiped from an old TC handgun grip and Gunkoted. Think maybe the older walnut factory stocks had kitty caps. Holes in cap didn't match up perfectly, but were tweaked so everything looks right.
I picked up a 10" Contender barrel with a brake about a year ago. It shoots great and I love the balance but I have to admit that the BOOM! is a little on the loud side. I haven't hunted with it mostly because when I've been hunting mule deer I prefer my 15" 338 Federal. It reaches out a tad further than the 35 Rem.
Have a MGM 30/40 Krag that plain shoots. Of course I couldn't leave well enough alone and purchased a 375 JDJ that I've been hunting the past several years. Picked up 44 mag that had been re-chambered to 444 thats a little tough on me. Also so have a 21" 45 colt barrel that I've yet to shoot. Both the Krag and the JDJ shoot well and are easy to carry in the Contender.
