Yeah, the best... except for the lack of adequate eye relief...
Mark Begich, Joaquin Jackson, and Heller resistance... Three huge reasons to worry about the NRA.

I noticed people were mentioning Leica riflescopes. Wasn't Leupold making or importing Leica products at one time? I can't remember where I read that, but I do remember seeing something about Leupold and Leica....

Remember, Leupold is marketing internationally and the Europeans (who generally own fewer rifles than Americans) put really expensive glass on their guns.

I can't remember where I read that, but I do remember seeing something about Leupold and Leica.... I recall that Leupold was assembling scopes using imported components for Leica. My recollections now lack details since I became eligible for Medicare yesterday!

Rick,
I've skimmed over the thread and links for these scopes, but I didn't see the answers to a couple of questions. Are these 1st focal plane (I hope)? And what is the eye relief for the 1.5x6?
Thanks!

I must agree with you! I owned a Schmidt&Bender 4X that I bought for a custom .338 built on a Dakota 76 action. The clarity and brightness were sharp as a razor but the eye relief was sorely lacking. My point being the Vari XIII 2.5x8 I used instead is not as sharp optically but it is fully adequate(as well as superior to alot of other scopes!) in all aspects of what a scope should be on a hunting rifle! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

So has anyone actually evaluated/looked through/fondled the new VX7 scopes?
I don't always venture out into the sub-freezing darkness, but when I do, it is deer hunting season, and I carry a Remington. Stay hungry my friends.

Eye relief is 4" at every magnification. Eye box is the best I have ever looked through. At some point though, a scope's features become superfluous. I don't have any gripes about a VX3 and they are about 1/2 price.
The new Swaro X6 or whatever it is called is also fabulous. Not sure how much they will cost though.

I'd rather spend the $1700 on a pair of 15x Swarovski's, which will prove of FAR more value in the field than a VX7. You don't need one of these scopes to kill anything under any circumstance in North America, or anywhere else. Bunch of hype...

Jason,
Several years ago Leica marketed scopes. They were assembled by Leupold on a (I think) Vari X III internals but held Leica glass. I never got to look through one of those, but my guess is they'd be the holy grail of rifle scopes. Number one, there is no better glass than Leica (though a couple are as good) and number two, anyone ever see a used one for sale?

Here's my 25-06 AI, fitted with a Desert Camo McMillian Classic stock I got from Rick, and topped with low rings with a Leupold 3.5x10x50mm VL7 Comes up very nice, and the glass is extreamly clear. Beyond that, at 54, my old eyes may not tell you much:

LEUPOLD's VX-7, even if the glass is AS GOOD, as a diavari from zeiss still comes up short in other areas like field of view and weight -------------------------------- Diavari VM/V 2.5-10x50 T*
Technical Data Magnification 2.5x-10x Objective (mm) 50 Field of view (feet at 100 yards) 43.5-12 Eye relief (inches) 3.54 Parallax free at 109.4 yds Windage/Elevation Adjust. Range (inches at 100 yds) 43.9 Center tube diameter (mm) 30 Objective tube diameter (mm) 56 Eyepiece tube diameter (mm) 40 Length (inches) 12.5 Weight (ounces) 15.9
Here is the 2.5-10x45 vx-7
Weight (oz): 19.2 XT-Duplex Length (in): 12 Eye Relief (in): 4.5 - 3.8 Field of View @ 100 yards (ft): 38.1 - 10.2
less FOV, more weight ------------------------------------------------------------------------- now a vx-7 w/ a 50mm obj
Weight (oz): 22.5
XT-Duplex Length (in): 13.7 Eye Relief (in): 4.5 - 3.8 Field of View @ 100 yards (ft): 28.6 - 7.4

Sako, your information on my scope is Not correct, hardly is the VXL 3.5 x10X50 22.5 ozs in wt, also your field of view, while close is also false information. Follows is the correct data:
VXL7 3.5x10x50 Leupold Scope
Product Specifications Actual Magnification: 3.3(3.5x) 9.7(10x) Length (in): 12.3 Eyepiece Length (in): 3.1 Objective Length (in): 4.0 Objective Diameter (in): 2.2 Eyepiece Diameter (in): 1.6 Tube Diameter: 1.0in Weight: 16.2 oz. / 460.0 grams Eye Relief (in): 4.6(3.5x) 3.6(10x) Eye Relief (mm): 117(3.5x) 91(10x) Obj. Lens Diameter: 1.9in / 47.6mm Max. Adjustment @ 100 yds (in): 57 Max. Adjustment @ 100 m (cm): 145 FOV @ 100 yds (ft): 29.5(3.5x) 10.7(10x) FOV @ 100 m (m): 9.8(3.5x) 3.6(10x)
Ring Spacing Max. Mount Ring Spacing (in): 5.3 Front Ring Space (in): 1.7 Rear Ring Space (in): 2.3
The best part, and I note clearly you dont mention it, is the fact that the Leupold VXL scopes with 50 + mm lens can be mounted on any rifle with "low scope mounts", When it comes up, it is right where it is supposed to be. Also, the lower a scope mounts to a rifle is always (always) the preferred location for accuracy, and fast aquisition of your target. That may not mean much to you, but I personally think Leupold has something here.
Finally, I am comfortable with Leupold's durability record, I can't utter that for Euro scopes..........

Yo uare not talking about the VX7, you are talking about the VXL. The VX7 has a 30mm tube and the 50mm obj is 3.5-14 not 3.5-10.
New Leupold 3.5-14x50 VX-7 30mm Riflescope Specifications Weight (oz): 22.5
XT-Duplex Length (in): 13.7 Eye Relief (in): 4.5 - 3.8 Field of View @ 100 yards (ft): 28.6 - 7.4 MOA: 1/4 Finish: Satin
New Leupold 2.5-10x45 VX-7 30mm Riflescope Specifications Weight (oz): 19.2
XT-Duplex Length (in): 12 Eye Relief (in): 4.5 - 3.8 Field of View @ 100 yards (ft): 38.1 - 10.2 MOA: 1/4 Finish: Satin
glad you like them i dont want an eclipse shaped scope on my gun 56mm, 50mm or whatever.
FOV is still substanially less than others is its price class and it appears WEIGHT IS MUCH MORE LEUPOLD DOESNT HAVE THE VX7 on their website yet, at least not the specs!

Your right, I do have the VXL, I like the price better. As for the eclipse, I love it.

Rick,
There seems to be a lot of people around here that say that the Leupold VariXIII does everything (possibly more) than some of the higher buck Euro scopes do.
Has Emericus cloned himself? Who are the other people?

Put an illuminated reticle in the VX7L and it'll be right up there with some of the Euros.

Why would anyone put a 50mm objective on a 10X scope? Are they shooting in the dark? And exit pupil of 4mm is all you need in twilight. On a 14x it makes more sense.
Be the person your dog thinks you are.
