getting ready for turkey season---I'm taking several young hunters on their 1st hunt. Patterning their shotguns, getting permission from landowners, building blinds, patterning blinds, etc. Plus just getting back to earth after winning the "Dink pork athon."

You have wanted to retire for a while Pat. Good for you.
You are going to wake up one day in the future (six months or so) and the "stress" of the job will be gone.
I think Sheriff is a good one to run for in your home town.
Get the stress gone first, get bored then go for it.

Pat, congrats.
When you leave you will feel the weight you never realized you were carrying lifted off your back, and a sense of relief will overcome you.
Before you leave...do all the fun stuff you enjoyed about the job when you first started.
-Go red light and siren to a call your really don't need to, (just don't crash.)
-Start a foot chase for no real good reason, (just dont catch him.)
-Stop a driver you know won't have a license, and when he tells you his song and dance, just smile and let him go.
After you leave, you will miss it tremendously, when you come to the realization that no other job will ever incite the degree of emotions both positive and negative.

I don't know. I had a couple of job offers as soon as news got around, but money has never been my motivation. I suspect something will gel. I may run for sheriff in my home county (NOT ghetto), but that would be few years down the road. Congrats Pat. 15 April is just in time for you to sign up to work for Trump's campaign.

Thanks all. Just making the decision is the hardest part. I figure it's a lot like having a kid, a heart attack or getting married...just jump on in and do the best you can. I retired at the end of 2001 after 30 years and 3 months of policing. I thorough enjoyed the job, but I can tell you that retirement fits Jess fine. I'm half way through my 15th year post retirement, and . . . . . . LIFE IS GOOD!
