Sitting in a coffee shop on the Kodiak waterfront listening to fishermen complain about the lack of decent hands...

Same guys that gang up to fish their halibut IFQs rather than hiring hands like they did back in the day... took a huge chunk out of the income of the kind of hands they want to hire. It was very good money back in the day.

Now they are bitching about the lack of crew loyalty and explaining that is why they stopped paying crew bonuses??? Purse seiners with the adaptability to toss herring gear or halibut gear aboard overnight...

They squeeze the hands out and wonder where they are... and there is a major shortage this year. Salmon selling for .28 a pound is part of the reason.

It's amazing how often the 'effects' are so often not tracked backward to their causes....

I guess hindsight is 20/20 as long as you don't have tunnel vision and rosy glasses.

This is a huge understatement and affects everything we are presented with everyday. My question would be why after realization in Hindsight we never actually attempt to fix it so that the issue does not come up again?

All about the money... they will bitch but getting good hands to come back costs too much to their ways of thinking.

Well, at least UAF took down Mississippi's "offensive" flag; perhaps banned students from Mississippi too, I don't know.

I see a day coming where the processors will have their own fleets and squeeze the average independent fisherman out of business.
