After having all sorts of various brands and sizes, I am a believer in the 8X32 to an all around binocular, as I haven't used the compacts since I got them...
This...exactly.

And an 8x32, or occasionally 6x30, is as small as I care to go, because even the very finest truly compact binoculars suck optically in comparison.

John, Have you had the chance to look through the Bushnell Elite 7x26's? Or better yet, the 1st generation of those binos? It's been quite a while, but when I compared the Bushnell's to the 20mm Leica/Swaro/Zeiss compacts, the European ones did indeed suck. I realize if a class of binos suck, well, they suck, but the 7x26 compacts have remained the reference standard for small binos on Better View Desired for 15+ years. If anarchy ever set in, and traveling fast and light was the order of the day, I would grab my Bushnell Custom Compacts. Casey

Casey,
The first generation 7x26's were the best compact binoculars I've ever used. They do suck less!

MD - have you tried the Nikon Monarch 7 8X30's? These seem very nice for the $300 range. I do agree that Nikon needs to get their act together as far as selling rifle scopes and hunter optics then being anti-hunter......they do make nice optics though.

For me anything smaller than 8x32 or 6x30 (Yosemite) just doesn't provide enough benefit to take hunting.
I've got an 8x20 Zeiss but rarely used.

I use Nikon Premiere LX 10x25's for turkey and waterfowl hunting. Not heavy around my neck or in the way at all. For hunting Mule deer in Eastern Or. I like a midrange bino and agree the MONARCH 7 8x30's fit my needs. Excellent clarity and not to heavy for a chest strap plus Nikon's No Fault Policy backing them up. I have been doing freelance shooting event's/PR for Nikon the last 6 years but using their riflescpes for over 20 by choice. The MONARCH 7's are definitely worth taking a look at. I am on my 3rd pair of MONARCH 7 10x42's, buddies borrow them and return a check instead of the bino's.

I have owned two or three compact binocs and I don't like them for hunting. Although they are lightweight, they just don't provide the clarity, field-of-view, and light-gathering qualities of full-size binoculars IMO.
I gave a pair of Nikon compact binocs away, and I still own a pair of Steiner Predators, but I mostly just keep them on the boat for occasional use (like seeing how the other fishermen are doing on slow days, etc).
But they are nice to carry.

This...exactly. The same for myself as well.

The 32 ELs I have work well enough that I sold my 42 ELs.
