338 win mag 225 gr @ 2847fps

For 5 gr. of diff, greater sectional density in the .300, and longer range, would you choose it over the .338 win. mag.?

Or would you choose the .338 Win. mag.?

Would the choice be diffrent if you had a .300 Win. Mag. 200gr. @2944 fps over the .300 Weatherby?

I wouldn't shoot 200's in any 30cal,unless it was huge capacity/long barreled and geared towards very distant paper via VLD.............................

[color:"brown"]While the .300 Weatherby/200 grain bullet is a great combination, the .338 Win. Mag. using a 225 grain bullet is a better one, even at a slightly lower muzzle velocity.

And it the case of a "disagreement" with a griz or polar bear, you could use a 250 grain Nosler Partition in the .338 Win. Mag. which is excellent "griz/polar bear medicine"... much better than anything you could put in a .300 Weatherby.

If comparing the .300 Winchester Magnum to the .300 Weatherby Magnum, I'd take the Weatherby due to a slightly larger case capacity yielding a slightly higher muzzle velocity resulting in a somewhat higher bullet energy with the same bullet compared to the .300 Winchester Magnum. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

This to me would be very easy, take the one you're most intimate with.

Both are excellent rounds and either one will do what you're needing done.

I'd just be sure to have the best head loaded that I could. Other than that it is all about fit and feel baby!

What about the 210 nosler partition in the 338,,,BC would be a little lower though,,,,,

That would work, I'd be for going the 210 TSX route but that is just me.

I'd go with the .300 Wby, but with 180 gr. Noslers. My experience with 200-grainers, in my case Swift A-Frames, has been that they are just too much for deer, sheep, etc. and not necessary. The 180 grs will perform well on all species you mentioned.

I don't see a lot of difference between the two. The 300 Weatherby certainly has the case capacity for a 200 grain bullet. But I tend to like the 338. If you are using the 338 I like the 250 Then I think the edge goes to the 338WM.

Bullet weight,largely means dick. SD is moot,less integrity.

The 165XBT in .308 is beyond sinister,as is the 210 in .338. I push both fast,via 30-8mmRemmag(3500fps+) and 338Ultra(3400fps).

Recoil is modest in comparison,trajectories exceptional and terminal performance routinely incredible.................

I took my Kodiak Brown Bear with my .300 wby with 200gr Nosler partitions.
He was DOA.
That bullet shot very tight groups as well.

My .300 wby @ 200 is shoulder jelly for me on whitetails. Over the years my favorite deer rounds are 30-06 = 220's, out of a long barreled Mark V, and .300 savage = 180's. out of 99 f or eg.
Reason: obviously knockdown power, and believe it or not minimal meat loss! Would the performance be much less on the above larger animals?

Since you include goats and sheep in your bag, the 300 Weatherby will do very nicely and it will handily take a bear. It's a super cartridge and my personal favorite. Elgin Gates used it to take practically all of the world's big game. Regarding bullet weight, although I am a 180gr user in my 300, a friend of mine with extensive use with the 300, postulates the 200gr gives you an advantage at longer ranges. If I was restricted to one rifle/caliber (perish the thought) it would be the 300 Weatherby. jorge

You get such a good S.D with a 30 cal 200 grain bullet it's hard not to like.The 300 Roy would launch a 200 grain pretty good.If going with a 338 stay around 225-25O- gr for the better S.D.Both rounds will do whatever you ask them to do.

I've always used 180s out of my 300 Win. Mag. when I've been on mixed-bag hunts in Alaska and BC, and I've not yet seen the need for heavier bullets.

I'm currently hunting with the 338 Win. Mag. almost exclusively, and I'm shooting 225 gr. Barnes TSXs @ 2850 fps. If I were going on a mixed-bag hunt any time soon, with an emphasis on moose and grizzly, I'd likely take this same rifle and load, zeroed for 200 yds. For 300 yd. shots, I put the tip of the lower verticle Duplex (Leupold 2.5-8x) right where I want the bullet to go. Very simple...........

I love 200 grain bullets in my 300 W. I dont hit deer in the shoulder, but if you go for that sort of thing and are worried about meat then a 25-35 might be a better choice.

I have taken Elk, Pronghorn, Deer, Coyote, and Grouse with my 300 and I am very happy with its performance.

I took at 300 win mag and 200gr. Northforks. Too much for sheep; did not get a shot at a Grizzly. I'll go back one day!

Why was it too much for sheep. Oh wait, all you really needed was Velcro gloves and rubber boots. I got ya.... . Did it really take you 10 years to finally get a chance to go sheep hunting?

Well duh that 300 was bad luck! Had it been a 338...
