Did you re-oil the knife after you sharpened and washed it? A-2 isn't a stainless steel and will rust faster than stainless especially if not properly oiled. Most of what I've heard about Bark River was good. That being said maybe you would be happier with a high end stainless such as S-30V...............DJ

I have a few as well. Got them about 1-2 years ago, before the prices really went up. I was or am in the same boat. Both I have are speckled. One was just from soaking the sheath in leather saddle conditioner and forming it to the knife for 6 hours.
I like the design and concept, but to do all over again, I would opt for "traditional" bladed and grinds. Some guys are die-hard BRKT fellas, like our Ingram crew. I may have not put enough effort into learning how to use and sharpen them, but then again, I shouldn't have to.
Please God, give me some good tags this year....

Did someone from Bark River tell you it wouldn't rust? How did you sharpen it?

The rummer you heard is just that a rumor and is not true. Almost all of the BR knives are A-2 or 12C27(STAINLESS) and hold a very good edge. Just like any steel knife you need to know how to take care of them and that means wiping them off after you use them and appling a fine coat of oil. Any knife, except stainless, will rust after sitting in saddle conditioner for 6 hours!
With a convex edged knife, all you really need to do is maintain the edge. And that can be a simple as stropping it on a leather strap, or a mouse pad with 800 grit sandpaper if it gets really bad.
A friend of mine skinned his whole moose with a BR this fall and claimed he could do another, all without loosing the knives edge and just stropping the blade on his pant leg.

I have a small bark river that has never rusted. Slit a whole bunch of salmon bellies open with it this summer and it still looks good.

I bought a small Bark River drop point for my son's GF last year at Christmas. She has skinned two deer, and a hog and a number of squirrels and rabbits. She sent the knive back to me in November, for a touch up. I think they are a good quality knive.

If cared for, they are outstanding knives. Some are carbon steel and will stain and rust if not kept oiled. I've been pleased with hte few I have and I'm rather picky when it comes to knives.
It's never too late to have a happy childhood.

Mannlicher, tell your son he'd better marry that girl, a good skinning woman is hard to find.
