What is the fastest 6mm caliber that can shoot 100, 110,115 bullets for deer. Like to keep with a factory caliber but would handled if required to get the maximum velocity. 240 Weatherby,257 Weatherby, 26Nosler? Not consirned with barrel life. Thanks for your advice...

Am guessing you meant to type 6mm+?

The 240WM is the only 6mm you mentioned. It is close to the wildcat 6mm-06 I believe.

I don't think you get much more velocity with a larger case. Go to a reloading manual and you'll see the velocities of the 240.

Are these for the 200 yards and under shots mentioned in the 240 Wby. thread? grin

I shoot 115 grain Bergers out of a 6mm Rem, on a 700 Long Action, that is throated to allow those bullets to be seated to magazine length....

With a 24 inch barrel, 1 in 7 twist, and a stiff charge of RL 19 ( which doesn't seem to affect the brass any), it will yield an MV of 3250 fps....

The rifle will run with any factory loaded ammo specs of the 240 Weatherby....all day long...

6mm-06 is my favorite with my 240 Wby running a close second

I too prefer 6mm Remington over the 240.

All else being equal whichever has the greatest case capacity will hold the greatest amount of propellant and hence provide the greatest velocity.

"All else being equal" - The chosen combustion chamber has to be balanced with an optimum powder burn rate and coupled with a barrel that will also take most advantage of the larger volume of gas produced. E.g, a 28" 6mm Remington loaded with a slow powder of some kind would likely outrun a larger case loaded with 4895 in a 20" barrel.

Couldn't tell you offhand which one that is since I don't know all of the case capacities of current factory offerings, but if you venture outside of factory ammo a 6mm/300 WSM might prove interesting, as would a 6mm/416 Rigby. The sky is the limit. Actually current powder technology is the limit. Rail guns would be the next avenue to explore for absolute maximum velocity.

I have all four, the 6mm-06, 240 Wby., 6mm Rem, and the 243 Winchester and deer out to 300 yards have to guess which one I shoot them with.

To me, it depends on the individual gun.

I have a great 240. If I had a great 6mm Rem or a great 6-06, I'd probably feel the same about those.

Doesn't the - 6mm/06 have a 'little' larger powder capacity?

Regardless I'd take the 6/06 over the Wby ONLY because of $$$, in the gun and brass.

Yep, but they're pretty close.

I make .240 cases out of 25-06 brass, quite a chore.

For a build, I'd go 8 twist 6-06 over .240 (10 twist). I traded for this .240 and it shoots too good to mess with.

And, in that 8 twist 6mm-06, I'd be shooting 105 Scenars.

My 10 twist .240 won't handle them, but does a super job with 100 gr. NPT's, like half MOA.

The 6mm-06 reportedly has a couple of gr. H2O capacity over the .240, the 6mm-06 AI version a bit more.

To me, twist is a bigger deal than a gr. or two, case capacity.

D F & bea -

Thnx for the info.

Seems to me the diff between the 240 & 6mm06 would be offset by 06 brass alone.

Could be.

Would just have to measure cases and compare.

One thing I've seen on H2O measurements, they tend to be all over the board, depending on technique, etc.

So, practically speaking, no difference.

Ross Seyfried did an interesting article on the 6mm Mach IV which is a sort of improved 6mm x .264 Win. round. I don't think he got the 100 grain bullets to 4,000 fps. but he got close. I think the estimated barrel life was about 800 rounds or less.

Anyone else play with the 240 PSP? I have one and shoot it, but I have never taken it deer hunting.
