I know the ruger 350 is a bit heavier than your specs, but you can't argue with the way they shoot. Best $500 I've ever spent on a factory gun:

Thanks Gasman...but in looking at the descrition I can guarantee it will not make the weight. The barrel is much too heavy. A friend has about the same barrel contour on a Sako action and I think a complete Kimber Montana weighs less less than his barreled action. Also Gasman...which rifle does Mtn Hunter have...I don't see a post above.

Lott...the Rugers are shooters aren't they!!! The little 18.25" one I have loves 250 grain bullets.

...if only I could put it on a diet....

Great articles thank you... A little longer box ona .350 RM would be nice...but since I am generating all the recoil I care to shoot I am not sure what the point would be. In the M700 Classic I was up to almost 2750 with a 225 nosler and ended up droping it back down to 2660 just for better shootability. That load from both a M600 carbine and 22" M700 and M<673 flattens deer and black bear like lightning...

If I build this lightweight I am leaning toward a .358...

This is the formula I used for a 338-08.

(Actually, it was a little more convoluted than this, but this was how it ended up)

Rem 700 S/A.......................$300
Pacnor Custom contour........$525
Rem Ti takeoff stock............$160 (IIRC)
Bedding, paint, light pad.......Priceless.......(done by me)

This rifle is 6.0 lbs w/Leo 4x32 in Burris Zee rings. Recoil is stout, but not excruciating. I'd say that this rifle with 250's is the max I want to shoot regularly. With 185's 200's 210's it is not bad at all.

JF...six pounds...wow. I didn't think one could put a M700 together that light. How long is the barrel and what is the "custom contour"?

6# ( or thereabouts) is not all that tough with a SA 700.
This is a .284 Win in a Brown Precision stock.

...I've got a Chet Brown "High Country" ,kevlar stock (11oz.),built on a Rem 600 action in 284 Winchester,with a Shilen stainless 20" barrel,it weighs in at 6 lbs 2oz with a bushnell banner compact 2X8 in conetrol rings and base. Chet built the rifle for me back in 1978 (he was the first with fiberglass ,and with kevlar stocks),and had Armoloy hard crome the gun throughout ,a pearl grey non reflective finish that is TOTALY impervious to rust,and EXTREMELY resistant to scuffingt and wear.The little gun hasn't had need of oil in all these years and still shoots under minute of angle groups....I wish I was as computer literate as you fellows,i'd post photos. The stock has a very unique camo job,sort of fernlike (Fir?)leaves of various earth tones against a drab green background..Such a rifle in .358 Win. would be a super timber gun for heavier game.....Chet has passed away but his outfit is still active..New Ultralight arms(Melvin forbes company) cobbles up super accurate,lightweight rifles on his own actions, and has many years of gunmaking under thier belt to prove the worth of what they make!..Rifles Inc (Les Webernik's company) shaves Remington actions down to minimum proportions and builds great lightweight rifles as well...

....Hey I've got yet anoughter idea thats simple and not overly costly. Pick up a CZ 527 carbine in 7.62X39 (Mine weighs 5lb.13oz.factory stock out of the box)..Rebarrel it to 6.5 Grendel for a 350 yd deer gun. fit to a lightweight fiber stock it could put it around 6 lbs. all up, with a well chosen compact scope...

a 6# 350 will rock you good. the 358 is a better mouse trap for the UL 35's IMHO.

if you gotta' have either in ss you might try a 8400 wsm and rebore for an additional $225 or so. cut the barrel to the length you want.... i am guessin you will meet your budget fine.

or the 700 way has been mentioned above... also could easily get there with a TI 700 and rebore. tha would be the coolest 358 around!!!! pederson told me he likes .250" at the muzzle. if your cutting to 20" or so you should be there.. no muss or fuss. send it to him and it comes back done..... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Thanks for all the great ideas. I agree that if the gun is going to be in the 6-7 pound class the .358 is the way to go. As to doing the gun in 6.5 and making it a 350 yard deer gun I already have a 6.5 RM and two super accurate .308s to fill those slots. I just need a rifle that will knock the socks off of anything I hunt at distances under 100 yards and is a light, short and easy to carry.

....Hey here's a really odd ball deal that would be one that garners alot of attention from fellow hunters, and would work to the range requested on game as large as elk or moose with well placed shots.A WWII M-1 carbine rechambered to 45 Win mag pistol cartridge.I recall an outfit that specialized in this conversion a few years back,but can't come up with thier moniker at the moment..The carbine would weigh just under 6 lbs. with 44 magnum ballistics. Anyone who's carried one of these carbines in the field can attest to how sweet they feel in hand,and how quick they are to shoulder and point of aim....Just a 'left' field idea that would set one apart from the field.
