I remember that article. I believe he necked down the 7 mm Rem mag to 6 mm.

IIRC Ross said fouling was a major bitch with the powders available at the time.

That was before DBC, which from what I've seen would help that fouling problem.

Not that this contributes anything much, but my old Rem 700 6mm with a 22" barrel gets 3070 fps with R-22 and 95gr BT's. It's actually my 13 YO daughters gun. Probably better powders are out there but I I have plenty of R-22 so I use it.

Anybody still use a 6.5 mm magnum? I read the reprinted article on it from the first issue of handloader in the recent issue. Interesting bit of history.

That's fast.

Wieland wrote an article recently in Rifle #286 about the 244 H&H, which is probably the fastest 6mm factory cartridge. I think he failed to give credit to the developer of the round, David Lloyd, an almost legendary deer stalker from the UK. Unfortunately, the 244 H&H uses 0.245"-dia bullets. GS makes a 70-grain monolithic that fits properly. It should be able to reach 4100 fps or a bit more.

Seyfried wrote up his 6mm Mach IV in the Nov 1993 issue of Guns & Ammo, page 46, stating he wanted a slightly modernized version of the 244H&H. He necked down 7mmRM brass in two steps, and fire-formed it to a 40-degree shoulder. He settled on Barnes X-bullets because nothing else would hold together at the velocities he was able to get with some surplus ball powders. With the 75-gr X, he had MVs of about 4150 fps from a 28" bbl. With 100-gr Xs, he got about 3630 fps with a 25" bbl.

The fouling that Seyfried experienced was a "ceramic-like carbon buildup in the throat that could barely be scratched with a carbide scribe." It's formation has been noted before in other high-intensity rounds. The problem is avoided by cleaning frequently with abrasive cleaners.

The 6-284, one of the more popular wildcat rounds, is the near-equal of the 6-06, It has a case capacity almost identical to the 240 Wby, and will produce about the same velocities.

The 6mm Catbird from Carmichael & Jarrett is a semi-standard wildcat. It's a 6mm-270 Win Improved, and was announced in the March 1991 issue of Precision Shooting. It can produce about 4050 fps with 70-grain bullets, and 3500 with 100-gr bullets.

The 6mm Sabre is another cartridge based on the 7mm RM case. It was developed in part by the Shilen people. With a 40-degree shoulder, it probably closely resembles the 6mm Mach IV. 68-grain benchrest bullets can reach 4270 fps; 80-grain match bullets 4100 fps. The cartridge was described in Preision Shooting of April 1998.

The 6mm Banshee, described in Preision Shooting of June 1990 is based on the 6.5x68 rimless case. The description provided no actual chronograph Some calculations suuggest a 105-grain bullet at 3700 fps MV.

Not much of a fan of the 6-06, shot the 6-284 for years and it seems to have better accuracy with about the same velocity

I like the 6-284 also. Its just about the upper end of practicality in the hot 6s, in my subjective opinion.

andrews1958:

I have no personal experience with any 6mm other than the .243 Winchester. But about 20 years ago I spoke at length with a local gunsmith whose main rifle for Missouri game was a 6mm-06 bolt action. He said that he that he used the Sierra 87 grain Game King with great satisfaction on everything from woodchucks through whitetail deer. I don't recall any other details about his load or his rifle. I believe that 500 to 600 yards was his normal maximum range; his usual hunting grounds were large tracts of Missouri River bottom ground. His rifle was on its fourth barrel at the time of our conversation. He said he averaged about 1150 rounds of accuracy life per barrel. I hope this helps.

That round at hyper vel. sorta reminds me of P. O. Ackley's writings about shooting burro's with the Swift. Check it out, pretty neat stuff.

I have a Ruger No. 1B with 26" barrel in 6mm Rem, and it shoots really well. I usually shoot 100 gr Partitions for hunting, but I need to check the Barnes TSX next...

Here's my 6-06 built on a SAKO AIII action with 1 in 8" BRUX 23" barrel just recently done. Haven't had time to do any loading or shooting yet but plan on Hornady 105 BTHP's w/RL-25 for starters. Hoping to get 3350 fps out of it. She's a little heavy at 10.25 lbs but I didn't build it to be light. I already had on hand plenty of 25-06, 270, and 30-06 brass to use, which was one of the reasons for choosing 6-06. [Linked Image]

Now, that's nice!

A tack driver, for sure.

Is that a #3 Brux?

I wish my .240 was 8 twist, I'd be all over those 105's.

Anybody noticed that Andrews1958 hasn't bothered to respond? In fact, he didn't even log onto the Campfire again for several days after his original, somewhat confused post on this thread. He does that a lot--which is why I asked him my question about exactly what he meant.

He asked another question about an hour ago on another Campfire forum about the best 100-grain bullet for the .257 Weatherby. If anybody wants to expend time and energy getting into all the details on that one, you might want to post. But don't plan on him responding.

Then it would be okay to recommend a Sierra GameKing, especially for close in shots, right?

Thanks DF. It's a #4, a little heavier than what I was expecting, but I like it.

Thanks '175. I have some and will try it.

Now I need to find a place to shoot it!

Thanks dog, I need a name for her. It will be different for me as I've hunted deer the last 20 years with just one rifle, a '81 BLR 308.
