Well, handloaded and most factory 180's in the 308 run EXACTLY with factory loaded 180's in the 30-06... a 180 at 2,630 isn't exactly not going to kill. And 308's kick noticeably less than the 30-06.
Will agree that 200's are better left to the 30-06.
Who's talking factory ammo ? Jerry

Thanks for taking the time to reply. I've never taken a shot on game with the 8x57, but I do not doubt that it is capable of any NA game. My pleasure. I like your avatar BTW. You are right that it's very adequate for any NA game. It was popular in Africa years back for medium game as well. My "camp gun" is a Sauer drilling that was ordered by a high ranking SS officer in late 1943 Germany. 2 23" 12 ga barrels choked F&F over a 8x57JR barrel. I put a lot of camp meat on the fire with that gun. Nice to have in AK hunt camp loaded with 2 00's, & a 200 gr 8mm bullet. Also my favorite turkey gun. So, American hunters have a lot of good and better, old and new cartridges to select from and argue about. What's not to like?

The .30-06's real name isn't Springfield, but The Venerable .30-06. It says 30 Gov't 06 on mine. I remember my grandfather always calling it the 30 Government.

Is the 308 REALLY neglected and underrated? Must be a jillion of them out there. Add that one to the "overrated" list... +2 With 180s & 200s, it's not IN the race. Ive always found that the 308 handles 200s and 220s just fine. I think the whole notion of lost case capacity to shorter necks is way overblown. In my handholds which are at or near max, i see maybe 100fps really world velocity between the 06 and 308 when loading heavies...I can't imagine any possible scenario where that would matter.

Shane has posted a number of his .308 loads that include 200+ gr bullets at very formidable speeds...

10.75 Mauser aka the 10.75x68
I built 1 on a ZKK600 action, stoke it up with modern powders and its every bit the old 404 Jeffrey, a classic African big game cartridge.
