I overheard in the lunchroom that one of my co-workers was hunting with his two brothers (he is 280 lbs and they are bigger) and one of them killed a deer 250 yds away.
By the time they got to the deer someone else was tagging it.
There was a short discussion which included some body language that indicated that if the shooter and his brothers
didn't leave the deer would not be the only one horizontal.
Hard to digest, what would you do in this situation? I am betting this was on public land but don't know for sure.

Loose some weight so it wouldn't take so long to get to the deer.

The worst part of a deer hunt is dragging it out. I would thank the fellow for stealing my deer and happily keep hunting!

there was 3 of them and they could not persuade the other guy to backoff, he musta been a big sumbitch. I would politely let him know that I also had a firearm and that if he really wanted to get killed over a deer I would oblige him............Blake

I agree with 500grains; I'd rather hunt deer than drag deer so let them have it and keep hunting.

I'm more a peaceful fella but I have come across hateful folks whiile hunting. In my book there's no deer worth arguing over; I'm hunting for the enjoyment and scenery... if I wanted grief I'd visit my mother-in-law.

Downfall of hunting public land. I"d say you were threatened though and have the right to file. Proof of who actually shot the deer is another issue.

Me, I'd probably run my mouth a bit and leave. Ain't worth the grief.

Holler "Look out! It's still alive!!!" and empty your magazine (hopefully filled with 150 Nosler BT's in a .300 Maggie of some sort) point blank into the hams, the shoulders, the tenderloins and maybe one right into the stomach for good measure and especially good eatin'.

Tell the man "You're Welcome" and walk off.

Most places the last guy to shoot the deer is the owner. I've heard of cases where the deer ran out of sight,a shot was heard and on follow-up,some one else was tagging the deer. It was usually suspicioned the deer was down and a guy runs up and plugs a dead deer.

Dunno, temper is a funny thing with me,but sitting here quietly no deer is worth a murder trial.

Exactly. Despite my tongue in cheek post, if someone is that much of a jerk I'd just walk away. Karma usually has a way of getting a-holes like that "in the end".

This happened to me one year. It was the largest deer that I have ever harvested. I shot, had a decent hit on the deer, by the time I followed the blood trail to the deer, someone had field dressed and tagged my deer. I never heard a shot after mine... The guy got cought a few years later, pulling the same B.S.

The only thing you can really do is discuss it, or walk away. I still get pissed off over that deer.

You're right...it's a no win and certainly not worth getting hurt or killed over. But some don't think that way.....

An elk camp some distance from mine, about 5/6 years ago, needed medical attention sent their way (via a medivac) as two of the boys had an out and out knife fight over the ownership of one lousy spike elk. Not superficial cuts....major, life threatening types.

I'm not much for "group hugs" or the like, but given the choice.......naw!

It was a group of sob's not just one hunter. They must be pretty gutsy to chase off three big men with guns!

About ten years ago I was experimenting with a small caliber and new bullet and shot a buck through the chest. It ran maybe 400 yards and another hunter shot and killed it. I just got close enough to know he had it down and turned and walked away. I had learned what wanted to know and I never tried to shoot another deer with that gun. I appreciate the hunter saving me a few more hundred yards of tracking as the deer was well hit just not with a big enough bullets and it was taking it some time to die.

Happened to me in 1996 when I dropped a 5x5 bull elk. I dropped him at 510 yards with my 378 bee. Bang flop. Broke his spine. A dude 100 yards away from the elk waklked up to it and shot it in the head--finisher shot. He called it his. After a verbal dispute I walked. I am not dying or killing some inbred mo-fo for an elk. Sorry.

Man. A 5X5 elk. That would be tuff to take. Could never understand why anyone'd want some one else's thropy on their wall.

Fourty years ago any deer was a good one here. Killing one was a BIG deal. One year dad came home upset because he'd hit a buck which ran out of site. Before he got to it one of the guys he hunted with fired a shot and claimed he'd finished the buck. It only had one hole in it.

Thirty years later the guy told him, "You know, I think it was you that killed that buck." Then he gave him the rack.

Even though it took a while the guy can be called a sportsman now.
In my mind I do not care if it is a 2 ton 10x10 bull elk. If I did not harvest it I will never ever take the credit. These idiots who do are huge liars in denial and worst of all some are actually beleiving their own lies.
